Overview of Argentina

Argentina, officially the Argentine Republic, is a country in the southern half of South America. Bordered by Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, Brazil to the northeast, Uruguay and the South Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Drake Passage to the south and Chile to the west, Argentina’s earliest known human activity dates back to the Paleolithic period.

Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital, is a beautiful city filled with frenetic energy. With streets smelling of spices used to cook local foods, loud with conversations and lined with beautiful buildings, your senses will be amazed. The city, which has an unusual blend of South American fire and western influence, is certainly unique. During your time here, why not head to a milonga to dance or watch the tango? Buenos Aires is the birthplace of tango and the passion with which it embraces makes it an ideal place to learn, or watch the pros! One thing’s for certain, South America’s dishes are some of the most exciting in the world. While in Argentina you must try empanadas. Originating in Argentina, these savoury parcels are typically filled with meat, vegetables and potatoes but variations also include fish - delicious!

Located close to Península Valdés, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Puerto Madryn is a hub for wildlife. Here, you can roam amongst penguins and elephant seals, spot whales from the shore and even scuba dive with sea lions. Though the city of Puerto Madryn is relatively small, there’s still plenty to keep you occupied during your time in port. Learn about the area’s ecosystem by visiting Ecocentro, a maritime museum that promotes a more harmonious attitude toward the ocean. Alternatively, head to the beach - of which there are many - to relax, have a picnic or take a dip in the sea.

The last stop before Antarctica for many, Ushuaia truly feels like a city on the edge of the world. The southernmost city’s scenery alone makes it well worth a visit. Its sea, mountain and forest views have captivated tourists for years’ even the most reticent of travellers will find themselves impressed by its breathtaking vistas and opportunities to explore the local wilderness. Trek Tierra del Fuego National Park, satisfy your taste for adventure at Cerro Castor or take a trip on Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino.

One of the most breathtaking South American landmarks, Iguazú Falls sits on the border of Argentina and Brazil. Surrounded by glorious flora and fauna, the stunning waterfall attracts millions of visitors each and every year.
