Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Port Elizabeth, South Africa Sun 23 Dec 2018

Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Port Elizabeth is the third largest port and the fifth largest city in South Africa. The center is spread over steep hills overlooking Algoa Bay. Except for some interesting historical architecture, 21st-century Port Elizabeth, or PE as it is commonly known, has few attractions of note. To compensate, the town is surrounded by charming countryside; it bills itself as the Friendly City. Its origins go back to the site of Fort Frederick around which settlers from Britain established Port Elizabeth in 1820.

East London, South Africa

East London, South Africa Mon 24 Dec 2018

East London, South Africa

As South Africa's only large river and sea port, East London is important for the export of citrus fruit, mineral ores and wool. A considerable amount of goods are imported here as well. The first documented vessel to arrive in these waters was in 1688 while searching for survivors of a shipwreck. In 1848, a proclamation annexed the area to the Cape Colony. Today, East London serves as the area's commercial centre and is a bustling town with a population of approximately 175,000. The town's small museum contains the world's only surviving egg of the extinct dodo bird, as well as a mounted coelacanth caught near East London in 1938, a fish thought to be extinct.

Richards Bay, South Africa

Richards Bay, South Africa Wed 26 Dec 2018

Richards Bay, South Africa

Richards Bay was named after Frederick William Richards of the British Royal Navy. When he learned of the conflict the English experienced in Zululand, Richards arrived with 250 men in support of his fellow countrymen. He also made a survey of the coast in 1879. In 1906, development of the area got underway with the founding of the Zululand Fisheries and the first ox wagon trek to the town of Empangeni. In 1928, Richards Bay got a hotel and a store, from which it gradually developed into the economic center of Northern Kwazulu-Natal. A new deep-water port inaugurated in 1976 is the second largest port in the country after Durban. In its wake, a number of large and small industries, hotels, shops and restaurants have sprung up, causing the town to develop at a record-breaking pace. The most important attractions however are found outside Richards Bay in the game reserves and cultural villages. For many visitors Zululand represents some of the "real" Africa, an area that covers much of central Kwazulu-Natal, including the port of Richard's Bay and the adjacent Hluhluwe Game Park. The region is dominated by the Zulu tribe; their customs, historical traditions and culture are evident throughout the region. The name Zulu derives from an early chief, whose descendants were called aba-kwa Zulu, or people of Zulu. Their capital is Ulundi, located north of the Tugela River. Much of Zululand comprises a scenic, hilly interior plus some coastal areas, where it is usually hot and humid.

Tulear Sun 30 Dec 2018

Tulear, also known as Toliary and Toliara, is situated on the southwest coast of the island of Madagascar, a wild area of semi-desert, the capital of the Atsimo-Andrefana region and the Toliara province. Located in the Southern Dry Forest, Tulear reminds one of an "old west" town with its dry air and dusty streets. This vast and diverse area is home to the Antandroy "people of the thorns" on the coast, to the nomadic Vezo fishermen, the Mahafaly renowned for their funerary art and to the north, the mysterious bush-dwelling Mikea. The people of the dry south or androy differ from all other Malagasy in that they do not cultivate rice. Instead, they plant meagre crops of melons, maize, cassava and millet. Tulear is the opening to the bush country of the vast and dense thorny forest where the main species are Didiera, Euphorbia and Baobabs a scenery with rare beauty. This huge area includes the Baobab country of Morondava and the Tsingy of Bemaraha in the north, the spiny bush of Andatabo in the centre and the spiny forest of Ifaty. The coral reef from Anakao to Ifaty beach is home to many marine species. Lying at the Tropic of Capricorn, Tulear was known as one of the routes to the Western Indian colonies. In 1500, the Portuguese established a trading centre at the estuary of Onilahy River in St. Augustin. Both the Dutch and the British attempted colonization without success. King Radama I (1810-1861), a Merina king who, with help from the British unified most of the country, opening it to English missionaries who spread Christianity throughout the island and transcribed Malagasy into a written language. In 1889, French expedition troops attacked Tulear and declared their domination over the whole territory. Madagascar gained its independence in 1960. The name of town was named by a Vezo pirog man and his explorer passenger. Upon arrival he declared “Toly Eroa”, which means “Here we are”. The passenger referred to it as “Tulear”. Malagasy is the primary language and French is spoken in many localities.

Toamasina, Madagascar

Toamasina, Madagascar Fri 04 Jan 2019

Toamasina, Madagascar

Today the town of about 70,000 is home to the country's largest port. Its once-fine colonial houses lend Toamasina a somewhat shabby elegance. It is a busy place with sailors and tourists, offering a variety of bars, restaurants and hotels. Most visitors spend only a day or two in town as the attractions are really found outside in the country. While in town, visit the colorful market, where vendors display a wide array of produce, seafood and spices such as vanilla, cloves and black pepper, and locally made quality straw goods. A get-acquainted tour by pousse-pousse (rickshaw), the common local transportation, is a fun way to explore the town and get a glimpse into the daily life and activities of its people. Be prepared to bargain with the driver when establishing the fare. The official language is Malagasy, with French as the second language, spoken mainly in the cities.

Pointe Des Galets, Reunion

Pointe des Gallettes, Reunion Island Sun 06 Jan 2019

Pointe Des Galets, Reunion

Located about 480 miles east of Madagascar and 102 miles southwest of Mauritius, Réunion is the largest of the Mascarene Islands. The archipelago, consisting of Rodrigues, Mauritius and Réunion, was named The Mascarentes following its discovery in 1512 by the Portuguese navigator, Pedro de Mascarenhas. The French made the decision to settle Réunion in 1642, but no one actually lived here until four years later when the French governor of Fort Dauphin in Madagascar exiled a dozen mutineers to the island. In 1649, the king of France officially took possession of Réunion and renamed the island Colbert Bourbon. After the French Revolution, the island took back its original name. Since 1946, Réunion has been administered by France as an Overseas Department, with St. Denis as its capital. Facilities here are comparable to any major town in metropolitan France. St. Denis straddles the mouth of the St. Denis River and sweeps upward into the flanks of la Montagne where modern apartment complexes and luxurious houses have replaced the shanty town of the post-war era. Pointe des Galets is the principal port of Réunion, 30-minute by car from the small capital, St. Denis. The island is best known for the rugged beauty of its interior. Major attractions include the fascinating and still active volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, and three extinct craters known as cirques. Their forested slopes are dotted with isolated villages. Two thirds of the western part of Réunion are covered by mountain ranges, with the 9,200-foot-high Piton des Neiges the highest point on the island. The major source of income is from agriculture, mainly sugarcane, vanilla and the production of geranium oil used as a fixative in perfumes.
