Overview

Experience the breathtaking beauty and mesmerising tranquillity of Norway’s scenic fjords to the full on this stunning seven night sailing. As well as calling into four enchanting fjordland destinations, Balmoral will sail into spectacular waterways to present you with spellbinding scenery that guests on larger ships simply wouldn’t see. Whilst ashore and on board, your time in the fjords will be unforgettable from beginning to end. A scenic cruise of Lysefjord is the perfect way to start your adventure, taking in views of stunning mountains, tumbling waterfalls and dramatic cliffs which will whet your appetite for the scenic delights to come. In Bergen you’ll have time to explore the iconic UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf and the bustling fish market; learn about the life and works of Edvard Grieg at the Troldhaugen Museum; and ride the Funicular Railway up Mount Fløyen for unspoilt views of the city and the surrounding fjords. From Flåm you can experience a memorable railway journey too, with a chance to ride the world-famous Flåmsbana line high into the mountains and see cascading waterfalls such as the incredible Kjosfossen up-close. Alternatively you could opt to take in Aurlandsfjord’s awe-inspiring scenery from 650 metres above the fjord at the Stegastein Lookout, before experiencing scenic cruising of Nærøyfjord – one of National Geographic’s top two Natural World Heritage Sites – aboard Balmoral in the evening. Your ship will then stop at Olden, where you can take a few hours to enjoy a relaxing stroll around the village amongst lush meadows and magnificent scenery; or join tours in search of a collection of stunning natural wonders. Perhaps take a trek into the Briksdalen Valley and encounter the glorious Briksdal Glacier; or visit the Kjenndalen Glacier before embarking on a boat ride on the beautiful Lovatnet Lake. Scenic cruising of the captivating Nordfjord and a glide by Hornelen – Europe’s highest sea cliff – follows, as Balmoral sails overnight to Ålesund. You’ll discover a wonderful collection of Art-Nouveau architecture in the town centre here; while the 418-step hike up Mount Aksla is well worth making to enjoy the views from the top. Your Norwegian escape will then conclude with yet more scenic cruising, diverting away from the direct coastal route back to the UK to take in the rugged scenery of Hjørundfjord.

The Ship

Named after the Scottish home of the Royal Family. Still smaller than most cruise ships today, there are 710 cabins and suites and generous public space for the 1,300 guests on board. The main restaurant is Ballindalloch (named after the Speyside village and castle), while the two other formal restaurants are Avon and Spey – named after two of Scotland’s most beautiful salmon rivers. There’s a comfy pub with occasional live music or comedy, cabaret and shows in the Neptune Lounge, or drift away with a cool drink and spectacular seascapes in the Observatory Lounge.
