What to see in Falmouth

As a port town, it has been the starting point for some of the most notable maritime adventures and today, it welcomes visitors with the promise of a memorable stay.

Overlooking the English Channel, Pendennis Castle stands as a sentinel on the headland. Built by Henry VIII, this imposing fortress has defended Cornwall from invasion since the Tudor period. A visit to the castle is a journey through time, as it has been updated through every period of conflict right up until World War II. The castle offers interactive exhibitions, ancient cannons and wartime tunnels that you can explore. The castle also provides sweeping views of the coastline and sea, making it a perfect spot for those looking to delve into England's past while taking in some of the best vistas Falmouth has to offer.

Just a short journey from the port, you'll find the lush and tranquil Glendurgan Garden. This subtropical valley garden, now under the care of the National Trust, is a maze of exotic gardens, vibrant blooms and quiet, shady pathways. The centrepiece is a superb cherry laurel maze, planted in 1833, which visitors young and old delight in navigating. Beyond the maze, walking trails lead you past giant rhubarb plants, banana plantations and lofty tree ferns – an almost jungle-like experience. The garden slopes down to the beautiful hamlet of Durgan on the Helford River, a perfect spot for a peaceful picnic or a paddle in the gentle waters.

The Fal River, which runs through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is one of Falmouth's greatest assets. A variety of ferries, boat trips and water taxis make their way up and down this river, offering an array of picturesque journeys. Opt for a leisurely cruise and soak up the rich history and diverse wildlife of this Cornish river. You can stop off at various points of interest, such as the town of Truro or the historic Trelissick House. For the more adventurous, kayaking tours give a more 'hands-on' experience of the river, allowing you to discover hidden creeks and secluded beaches at your own pace.
