The beauty of Saga’s cruise ships is their diminutive stature, allowing them to reach smaller ports that other, larger vessels cannot visit
If you live within 75 miles of Dover or Southampton, your own personal chauffeur will collect you from your home, load your luggage and drive you to your ship. If your home address is between 76 and 250 miles away from port, you’ll be driven in a shared service with up to three other guests; a fantastic way to meet fellow passengers and start to make new friends.
If you prefer to drive yourself to Dover or Southampton, free parking is included in your price; alternatively, you may prefer to request flights from your local airport, go by train or take a coach. There’s no luggage allowance to consider, either, meaning you won’t have to choose what to leave behind.
Once on board, you’ll understand why Saga’s cruise ships are so beloved by guests. Indeed, 99 per cent of passengers described their cruise as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’. And with two staff to every three guests, you can be assured of a truly personal service of an exceptionally high standard. Saga’s ships boast fine dining, excellent entertainment and grand public rooms, along with well-planned itineraries.
On the Sapphire you are invited to choose between standard cabins, outside cabins, superior cabins and suites. Accommodation on the Sapphire has undergone extensive renovation as part of a multi-million pound refit; their average size of 220 square feet is around 50 more than the industry standard. In addition, the ship boasts 44 cabins specifically for the solo traveller.
All cabins benefit from air conditioning, an en-suite bathroom, dressing table and flat screen television as standard, amongst a host of other features. Superior cabins benefit from the same along with a window or porthole, French doors or balcony and good views of sea or port. Guests in the suites will enjoy a full butler service, minibar with selected drinks, flowers and canapes. All accommodation has a 24-hour room service facility for meals, snacks and refreshments.
Saga specialises in creating cruises with the needs of the solo traveller in mind; every effort is made to ensure that the Sapphire has a friendly atmosphere to put single people at their ease. There is provision for many specifically designed solo traveller cabins and no single supplements on double cabins. You’ll enjoy a Sailaway cocktail party and Singles Mingle drinks alongside fellow guests who are also travelling alone.
You’ll find plenty to keep you entertained during your time on board with an extensive selection of free lectures, quizzes, dance classes and entertainment. Get your adrenaline pumping in the gym, play a deck game or borrow an iPad to keep in touch with friends and family back home.
The ships each have their own libraries where you can relax with a good book, or why not simply head to a quiet corner to watch the world go by and take a moment for yourself? Evenings on board offer plenty of thrilling options, from cocktail parties and cabaret shows, to classical recitals and casual dinners.
Fine dining is one of the real pleasures of cruising with Saga. Best of all, you can eat wherever and whenever you like, in a choice of venues to suit your every mood. Such as The Club by Jools on board Spirit of Discpvery, a steakhouse with a quality menu to rival some of the world’s finest supper clubs, and a sociable atmosphere and line-up of evening entertainment to match.
You may be lucky enough to be asked to dine with the Captain in the Chart and Ward Rooms which seat just 14 people. Don’t forget room service is also available at any time of the day or night.
An extensive menu of shore excursions is included in each cruise itinerary; these will be sent to you six to eight weeks in advance, allowing you to plan and book your trips in plenty of time. This can be done online or by filling in a booking form and sending it back. Some tours do have limited availability so it’s advisable to reserve your place in advance, though both ships have a Travel and Tours desk where you can book onto excursions during your voyage.
Once you’ve sailed with Saga for more than 35 nights, you’ll become a member of the Britannia Club. There are different tiers depending on how frequently you travel, from bronze through to silver, gold, sapphire and diamond. Each level gives you different benefits, from a regular newsletter to a free cruise.
Saga’s speciality cruises have already proven to be hugely popular – and there’s no doubt you’ll be just as delighted with your choice.
