What to see in Åndalsnes

From Åndalsnes port, one of the most breathtaking adventures you can embark upon is a ride on the Raumabanen Railway. Often hailed as one of the most scenic train journeys in Europe, this trip is as mesmerising for seasoned travellers as it is for first-time visitors. Starting at Åndalsnes and stretching towards Dombås, this 114 km rail journey will carry you through picturesque landscapes, winding valleys and alongside the turbulent Rauma River. One of the standout sights during the journey is the Kylling Bridge, an architectural marvel that stretches across the Rauma River, offering a brilliant vantage point of the verdant surroundings. As you approach Verma, keep an eye out for the cascading waterfalls, especially the stunning Stigfossen waterfall, which tumbles down 320 meters from the mountains above. Whether you’re on a quick day trip or a longer exploration, the Raumabanen Railway provides an intimate perspective of Norway’s natural beauty.

Another gem easily accessible from Åndalsnes port is Trollstigen or the Troll's Path. Known for its dizzying sharp bends, this serpentine mountain road is a favourite for thrill-seekers and is one of Norway’s most visited attractions. As you ascend, you'll be treated to magnificent views of the Stigfossen waterfall, which drops almost 320 meters down the mountainside. At the top, there’s a well-designed viewpoint, allowing visitors to safely enjoy the panoramic vistas of the winding road and valley below. However, it's not just the journey but also the destination that makes Trollstigen special. Once you reach the top, you are greeted by a plateau that provides breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including the King, the Queen and the Bishop. If you're visiting during the summer, you might even catch sight of the lush valley floor, dotted with tiny farms that seem almost too idyllic to be real. Remember, due to its high elevation and the snowy conditions of the region, Trollstigen is only open from May to October.

For those looking to stretch their legs and soak in some of Norway's most awe-inspiring landscapes, the hike to Rampestreken Lookout is a must. Starting from the town centre near the port, the trail to this lookout point is well-marked and winds through forests and rocky terrains, eventually opening up to offer hikers unparalleled views. The entire hike takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace, and while it might be a bit challenging for beginners, the view from the top makes every drop of sweat worthwhile. At 537 meters above sea level, the Rampestreken Lookout offers a panoramic view of Åndalsnes, the Romsdalsfjorden and the surrounding alpine landscapes. For those with a head for heights, the viewing platform extends out from the mountain, providing a unique, almost floating experience.
