What to see in Vigo

Vigo, situated in Galicia, Spain, is a coastal city celebrated for its maritime traditions and modern charm. Its alluring blend of historic districts, delectable seafood and scenic vistas make it an inviting destination. Explore the Casco Vello, savour fresh catches and soak in panoramic views, all in this coastal gem.

Vigo’s historic heart, the Casco Vello, offers a delightful journey through its charming streets, historic buildings and bustling squares. As you step into this ancient quarter, you'll find yourself immersed in the city's rich maritime heritage and Galician culture. Start your exploration at the Plaza de la Constitución, the main square of the Casco Vello. Here, you can admire the beautiful façade of the Church of Santa María, a 19th-century neoclassical gem. The square is a hub of activity, with cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a coffee or a meal while soaking in the lively atmosphere.

Perched atop Monte Castro, the Castro Fortress provides panoramic views of Vigo's harbour and the surrounding coastline. This historic fortress, dating back to Roman times and later rebuilt during the 17th century, is not only a testament to Vigo's military history but also an excellent vantage point to appreciate the city's natural beauty. To reach the fortress, you can take a scenic walk from the Casco Vello or opt for a short drive. As you ascend the hill, you'll pass through lush greenery, including eucalyptus trees and Mediterranean vegetation. The journey itself is a serene experience that transports you from the city's hustle and bustle to a tranquil natural setting.

Vigo’s reputation as a seafood haven is well-deserved and one of the best places to savour the freshest catches is the neighbourhood of O Berbés. Located along the waterfront, O Berbés is a lively area where local fishermen bring in their daily hauls, creating a vibrant seafood market atmosphere. Stroll along the bustling quayside and watch as fishermen unload baskets of fish, octopus and other maritime treasures. The colourful stalls and seafood vendors add a splash of authenticity to the scene. You can even strike up a conversation with the locals to learn about their catch of the day.
