Inverness, often regarded as the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, is a city that offers a harmonious blend of history, culture and breathtaking natural landscapes. Situated at the northern end of the Great Glen on the banks of the River Ness, Inverness provides a plethora of activities, especially around its picturesque port area.
One of the city’s most iconic landmarks is Inverness Castle. Although the current red sandstone structure dates back to the 19th century, a castle has stood on this site since the 11th century. The castle, with its majestic presence, offers a historical journey and stunning views over the city and the river. Visitors can explore the castle grounds and the North Tower, which houses the Castle Viewpoint. Here, they can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Inverness and its surrounding landscapes, including the famed Loch Ness. The castle also serves as a backdrop for the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, which delves into the rich Highland history and culture, showcasing artefacts ranging from Pictish stones to contemporary art.
A cruise to Inverness would not be complete without exploring the legendary Loch Ness, located just a short distance from the city. Loch Ness is one of Scotland's most famous lakes, known worldwide for the myth of the Loch Ness Monster, or 'Nessie'. Visitors can take a boat tour from various points along the lake to enjoy the serene beauty of the Highlands and perhaps catch a glimpse of Nessie herself. The Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition in Drumnadrochit provides an insightful and entertaining look into the natural history of the loch, as well as the legend of the Loch Ness Monster. The exhibition blends folklore with scientific explorations of the lake, making it a fascinating visit for those interested in both the myth and the reality of Loch Ness.
Not far from Inverness port, the Culloden Battlefield offers a poignant look into one of the most significant events in Scottish history. This is the site of the Battle of Culloden, the last pitched battle fought on British soil, where the Jacobite forces led by Bonnie Prince Charlie were defeated by government troops in 1746. The battlefield has been preserved almost as it was on the day of the battle, and a visit here is a sombre and moving experience. The Culloden Visitor Centre features interactive exhibits that bring the history of the battle to life, with immersive displays and artefacts from the period. Walking the battlefield, marked with clan stones and memorials, is a powerful reminder of Scotland's turbulent past.
