What to see in Mohács

Mohács, nestled along Hungary's Danube River, is renowned for its lively Busójárás festival and vibrant cultural traditions. This picturesque town offers a serene riverside ambience, historic landmarks and a glimpse into rural Hungarian life. Mohács is a hidden gem along the Danube, blending folklore, history and scenic beauty.

Mohács is most famous for its annual Busójárás festival, a lively and unique celebration that showcases the town's rich cultural heritage and folklore. This colourful event, which typically takes place in February, draws visitors from far and wide to experience the vibrant traditions of Hungary. The Busójárás festival is rooted in a centuries-old tradition of the local Croatian and Serbian communities in the region. It marks the end of winter and the welcoming of spring and it's characterised by elaborate masks, traditional costumes and joyful music and dance. One of the festival's highlights is the Busós, masked and costumed figures representing the end of winter. These Busós parade through the town, making a grand entrance by crossing the Danube on boats. Their intimidating masks and attire are believed to drive away evil spirits and ensure a prosperous year ahead.

Located just a short drive from Mohács, the city of Pécs is a historical and cultural treasure that beckons exploration. With its rich history, well-preserved architecture and vibrant arts scene, Pécs is a must-visit destination in southern Hungary. Begin your exploration in the city's historic centre, where you'll find the Pécs Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece with a stunning interior. Nearby, the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter is a hub of creativity, featuring art galleries, workshops and the iconic Zsolnay Porcelain Museum.

Mohács is surrounded by vineyards and a visit to the nearby Villány Wine Region offers an opportunity to savour some of Hungary's finest wines. Villány, often referred to as the Bordeaux of Hungary, is renowned for its red wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Embark on a wine tour and explore the picturesque vineyards and wineries that dot the region. Many wineries offer guided tours and tastings, providing insights into the winemaking process and the history of the area.
