What to see in Granada (Málaga)

Granada, a gem in Andalusia, Spain, is famed for the Alhambra Palace's Moorish splendour. Its historic Albaicín district charms with narrow, cobbled streets and whitewashed homes. A cultural crossroads with rich Islamic, Jewish and Christian heritage, Granada boasts stunning architecture, vibrant traditions and breathtaking mountain views.

The Alhambra Palace is undeniably the crown jewel of Granada. This majestic fortress and palace complex, perched on the Sabika hill, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of Moorish architecture and history. Originally constructed as a small fortress in 889 AD, it was later transformed into a royal palace by the Nasrid emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar in the 13th century. The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage site and rightly so, as it encapsulates the pinnacle of Islamic art and architecture in Spain. Visitors can marvel at the intricate stucco work, ornate wooden ceilings and exquisite tile mosaics that adorn the palace walls. The Nasrid Palaces, including the Hall of the Ambassadors and the Court of the Lions, are particularly breathtaking.

After immersing yourself in the splendour of the Alhambra, a visit to the Albaicín district offers a completely different yet equally captivating experience. The Albaicín, with its maze of narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses, is the old Moorish quarter of Granada. Walking through this historic district is like stepping back in time. The Albaicín is renowned for its traditional Andalusian architecture, characterised by cobblestone streets, picturesque courtyards and vibrant ceramic tiles. As you wander through the labyrinthine alleys, you’ll discover charming plazas, historic churches and traditional tea houses known as teterías. One of the highlights of the Albaicín is the Mirador de San Nicolás, a popular viewpoint that offers breathtaking panoramas of the Alhambra with the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains in the background. It’s a perfect spot to watch the sunset and capture some stunning photographs.

Another must-visit neighbourhood in Granada is Sacromonte, famous for its cave dwellings and vibrant flamenco culture. Situated on the Valparaíso hill, just across the river from the Albaicín, Sacromonte has been home to the Romani community for centuries. The district is characterised by its unique cave houses, carved into the hillside, which have been inhabited since the 16th century. These whitewashed caves, known as Cuevas, provide a fascinating glimpse into the traditional way of life in Sacromonte. Many of these caves have been converted into flamenco tablaos, where you can experience authentic flamenco performances in an intimate setting. Flamenco, with its passionate music, singing and dancing, is an integral part of Andalusian culture, and there’s no better place to experience it than in Sacromonte.
