View Cruise DealOkinawa is a destination where history, culture and natural beauty perfectly intertwine. Known for its unique identity, which transcends traditional Japanese culture, Okinawa offers a captivating mix of experiences that beckon travellers from all corners of the world. Whether you’re exploring lush forests, discovering the mysteries of its past or indulging in its flavourful visuals, Okinawa promises to deliver an unforgettable experience.
One of the first places to delve into Okinawa’s rich history is the Shurijo Castle. This UNESCO World Heritage site, once the heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom, orchestrates a vivid journey back in time. The castle, with its reimagined architecture after being destroyed in a fire in 2019, offers visitors a glimpse into the labyrinth of royal life and the intricacies of Okinawa’s past. As you walk through the castle’s intricate corridors, you’ll be immersed in the colour and craftsmanship that characterised the Ryukyu court. The vibrant red walls and sweeping tiled roofs stand out against the verdant backdrop, creating a beautiful mosaic of traditional design. The castle grounds are also home to gardens and a scenic overlook that provides stunning views of Naha, Okinawa’s capital. Though the castle was tragically damaged, its cultural significance remains a testament to Okinawa’s enduring spirit.
After immersing yourself in Okinawa’s past, a visit to the Gyokusendo Cave offers an entirely different experience. Located in the Okinawa World theme park, the Gyokusendo Cave is the longest cave on the island, stretching over 3 miles. This impressive limestone cave features stunning stalactites, stalagmites and underground streams, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. Visitors can take a walk through the cave’s illuminated pathways, marvelling at the natural formations that have been centuries in the making. As you wander through the cave, you’ll encounter fascinating features such as the “Drapery Room,” where the walls seem to shimmer like curtains of stone and the “Waterfall Room,” which showcases a beautiful underground cascade. The cave is not only an awe-inspiring natural wonder but also an educational experience, with informative displays that explain the cave’s formation and the geological processes that have shaped it.
For those looking to experience Okinawa’s natural beauty, Kokusai Street in Naha is a must-visit. Known as the heart of Okinawa’s shopping and entertainment district, Kokusai Street offers a perfect mix of local culture and modern amenities. The street is lined with shops, restaurants and stalls selling everything from traditional Okinawan crafts to the island’s famous sweet potatoes. You can stroll through the bustling street, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, and sample local delicacies like sata andagi, Okinawan doughnuts or goya champuru, a stir-fried dish made with bitter melon, tofu and pork. Kokusai Street is also home to cultural landmarks like the Makishi Public Market, where you can explore the colourful market stalls and interact with friendly locals. The market is a great place to buy local produce, seafood and handcrafted goods, making it an excellent spot for souvenir shopping.
