Only about fifty are inhabited. The Kuna rule the San Blas Territory with internal autonomy, and have tightly preserved their language and cultural traditions over the centuries despite influences from European colonies. In addition to their own language, Spanish is widely spoken and many men work on the mainland, but live on the islands. The women wear costumes with unique designs based on local themes, geometric patterns, and stylised fauna and flora.

Moorea, French Polynesia Thu 04 Feb 2021

Moorea

Tahiti's heart-shaped sister island Moorea is located only nine miles across the Sea of the Moon from Tahiti. While Bora Bora and Tahiti are the destinations most prominently advertised, it is Moorea, the Magical Island that is the best-kept secret of the trio of famous French Polynesian islands. In fact, Moorea has often been likened to James Michener's mythological island of Bali Hai - and it is easy to see why. Picture perfect lagoons and gleaming white beaches are surrounded by jagged mountains and volcanic spires. Its six mountains include Mount Rotui. From its summit there are spectacular views of Opunohu Bay and the island. Captain Samuel Wallis was the European discoverer of the Windward Island in 1767. After leaving Tahiti, he passed along the north coast of Moorea without landing. The first European visitors to the island include botanist Joseph Banks and some sailors sent ashore by Captain Cook in 1769. Captain Cook himself anchored in Opunohu Bay for one week in 1777, but never visited the bay that now bears his name.

The city sprawls eastward from Manila Bay. Its streets range from multi-lane boulevards to maze-like alleys. In this metropolis of 12 million, the contrast between spacious well-maintained elite communities like Forbes Park and overcrowded slum areas such as Tondo is immense. Occupied over the decades by the Spanish, Americans, British and Japanese, East now meets West, giving the city its unique character. The Walled City, a medieval fortified town, was the heart and soul of the country for more than 300 years. This city fortress, surrounded by moats and turreted walls 30 feet thick, was known as Intramuros. Only members of the Castilian upper class, friars, soldiers and government administrators were privileged to live inside the walls; natives had to live in the outlying boroughs.

Keelung, Taiwan

Keelung, Taiwan Thu 11 Mar 2021

Keelung, Taiwan

Taiwan, also known as Formosa, has always been on the outskirts of the Chinese Empire, although significant Chinese migration did not occur until the 15th century when people of Fujian province just across the Taiwan Strait began migrating to the island in ever increasing numbers. In 1949, when the Communists gained control of the mainland, Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang (KMT) fled to Taiwan, taking with them their flag, constitution, and the vow to retake the mainland, not to mention about 1.5 million people. Born out of a civil war, Taiwan's status is still ambiguous - is it an independent nation or a province of China. The natural, deep-water harbour of Keelung (or Chi-lung) is an important commercial, military and fishing port, whilst at the same time serving as a strategic, natural safeguard to the whole Taipei area. Keelung City's history includes Spanish and Dutch occupation during the 17th century. From this period remain several ruined forts. Keelung Port is 28 miles (45 km) from the capital Taipei. The drive may take from 50 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.

Under the rule of many kingdoms and dynasties, Incheon has been known by several different names since it was first recorded in 475 AD as Michuhol. When the port was opened in 1883, it was called Jemulpo and the surrounding area, ‘Inchon-gun’. By the Second World War when the city became the sight of a Japanese prisoner of war camp, it was generally referred to as Inchon.

Cruises to Japan

Hugging the shore of Kinko Bay, this southernmost city of Kyushu is warm, sunny and relaxed. It features palms, flowering trees and bushes, and broad avenues. With the ominous volcano of Sakurajima overlooking Kagoshima across the bay, the city is often called the Naples of Japan. Kagoshima's history was dominated by a single family, the Shimazu clan, who ruled over the city for nearly 700 years. As an important trading center for China, outside contact played a significant part in this port city. The arrival of St. Francis Xavier in 1549 brought further outside influence, and a number of Japanese converted to Christianity. In the mid-19th century, the Tokugawa shogunate began to lose strength, and the Shimazu family was beginning to look toward the future. They built the first Western-style factory and smuggled 19 young men out of the country so they could learn foreign languages and technology in Britain. On their return, these men played an important part in the Meiji Restoration and the modernization of Japan. An important local figure during the Meiji Restoration was a samurai by the name of Saigo Takamori. He was an educator, scholar, philosopher, and poet, and played a major role in the restoration of the Emperor Meiji and the advancement of technology. When the ancient rights of the samurai class were rescinded, Takamori became disillusioned. He led a brief and unsuccessful rebellion, and eventually committed ritual suicide. To this day, he is remembered by many Japanese who visit the spot on Shiroyama Hill where he died.

Salalah, Oman Tue 27 Apr 2021

Salalah is the capital of Dhofar Province, which is the southern region of the Sultanate of Oman. Green areas scattered across town give the city a tropical atmosphere and have earned it the name "Garden City." It is a laid-back place with a few resort hotels dotting the sandy seashore. The Dhofar region has been known for centuries for the production of frankincense. The narrow belt and the mountain range benefit from the southwest monsoon winds, which are an unusual feature for the Arabian Peninsula. The moisture-laden winds bring rain from the end of June to August. Heavy mists blanket the coast and mountains during these months, creating lush, green hillsides and cooler temperatures, the perfect environment for frankincense trees to grow. Behind the mountain range lies the hot desert, unaffected by the monsoon, and the domain of the hardy Bedouins and their camels. Along the coast lie miles of deserted beaches, bordered by a brilliant blue sea. Other attractions around the countryside include ancient forts, archaeological sites, fishing villages and the tombs of prophets. But it is mainly the rugged landscape and the beaches that appeal to visitors with a penchant for unspoiled destinations. Indeed, Salalah has to be appreciated as an off-the-beaten-track location and for the uniqueness that marks the Dhofar region.

The port city of Safaga is located on the western flank of the Red Sea, across from the shores of Saudi Arabia. The dusty streets are for the most part quiet, save for the occasional truck or bus. Diving enthusiasts come to the few resort hotels located north of Safaga to enjoy one of the world's best and relatively unspoiled locations for underwater exploration. Their number is steadily increasing. As a result, Safaga's facilities are gradually improving. For cruise vessels calling here, Safaga serves as the gateway to Luxor, which ranks among the most important destinations in Egypt, topping the list of must-see attractions. Guests who are not planning to take the excursion to Luxor will find very limited activities in Safaga itself, except for souvenir shopping at some tourist villages and diving and snorkeling tours at resort hotels. Ashdod is one of Israel's largest ports, and, like every other square inch of this remarkable nation, a living museum of ancient history. Freighters stream in and out of the harbor close to the spot where the whale disgorged Jonah, and the city hums with giant cranes and cargo ships and the relentless energy of a strategic Mediterranean port. It was one of the five cities of giants, and it was here that the Philistines brought the captured Holy Ark, sacred to the Hebrews. Ashdod's 23-level tel (archaeological dig) lies southeast of the modern city. Among the remains of the 10th century CE Fatimid Fortress, archaeologists discovered an early Arabic document recounting that Byzantine ships once brought Muslim prisoners to Ashdod to sell back to their families.
