Transfer by road from Cuzco airport to the town of Pisac, a journey of approximately 1 hour. Sacred Valley via Pisac market: Gateway to the Sacred Valley, the town of Pisac was of supreme importance in Inca times. It was the site of one of the most important fortresses built to guard the capital of the empire. Today, the town of Pisac is a sleepy hamlet of brown adobe buildings with faded red-tiled roofs and narrow cobblestone streets. A mixture of Inca and colonial influences, parts of the town date from the colonial era, and in the church Mass is still said in Quechua. The town has a market in the main square every day that is renowned for its colour and vibrancy. People from the local villages, many of them in traditional dress, travel to the town and the many wares on offer include food items, handicrafts, ponchos and rugs. After your visit, continue to your hotel in the Sacred Valley for your two night stay, a journey of approximately 45 minutes. The Sacred Valley of the Incas is the perfect place to explore, relax and unwind either before or after your visit to Machu Picchu. An area of outstanding natural beauty set against a backdrop of the Andes mountains, the fertile Urubamba Valley is surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks and is home to some first class hotels, many renowned for their spas. For the more actively minded the region is full of sites of great cultural and historical interest such as traditional villages, indigenous markets and Inca sites, making it ideal for a longer stay. Ollantaytambo is a small town built around a superbly preserved Inca fortress. The fortress guarded the entrance to this part of the valley and protected it from possible invasion from the lower jungles. The central part of the ruins is the Intihuatana group of temples and rock outcrops, which reveal the most magnificent Inca masonry. The design and foundations of the majority of the buildings in the town also date from the Inca era, when Ollantaytambo was a strategic military, religious and agricultural centre.

Board the Belmond Hiram Bingham train. This luxury train is operated by the Belmond group and is named after the American explorer who rediscovered the ruins of Machu Picchu. The train has two elegantly decorated dining carriages and one bar car with seating area. Brunch will be served on board as you pass through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Machu Picchu. Arrive at Agua Calientes.

Shared Machu Picchu ruins visit: Incas left legends of forgotten cities and treasures, the most incredible of which is Machu Picchu. It lay hidden from the world until its rediscovery by the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Enjoy a guided tour of the site consisting of more than 200 buildings of perfectly chiselled unmortared stone, as well as baths, temples, altars and houses constructed in terraces and connected by stairways carved from solid rock.
Please note that the site regulations allow a maximum stay of 2 or 3 hours per entry depending on the tourist circuit included on the ticket, and exiting and re-entering on the same ticket is not permitted. Each ticket has a specific entry time and you will be required to exit the site accompanied by your guide. Take the bus down to the station at Aguas Calientes. Hiram Bingham Train from Machu Picchu to Rio Sagrado: Board the Belmond Hiram Bingham train for your return journey to the Rio Sagrado stop in the Sacred Valley. A three-course dinner will be served onboard the train. The train operation and schedules may be subject to change due to natural events, industrial action or track repairs. You will be met by your Cox & Kings representative and taken your hotel, a journey of approximately 45 minutes. (B,L,D)

Cuzco Tour – Full Day: The tour will begin with a visit to the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman. This site contains huge rocks weighing up to 300 tonnes, which are fitted together with absolute perfection, including three walls running parallel for more than 360 metres and 21 bastions. Sacsayhuaman was thought for centuries to be a fortress, but the layout and architecture suggest a great sanctuary and temple to the Sun, which rises exactly opposite the place previously believed to have been the Inca's throne and which was probably an altar.

Lunch will be taken at Calle del Medio restaurant. After lunch, visit the return to the centre of Cuzco and visit the Plaza de Armas. On the northern side of this plaza, a visit will be made to the magnificent cathedral, built in the early 17th century on the site of the Inca Palace of Viracocha. The high altar is made of solid silver and the altar retablo behind it is a masterpiece of native wood carving. In the sacristy are paintings of all the bishops of Cuzco and a painting of Christ attributed to Van Dyck. Much venerated is the crucifix of El Senor de las Temblores, the object of many pilgrimages and viewed all over Peru as a guardian against earthquakes. The tour concludes with a visit to the Santo Domingo monastery, built in the 17th century on the walls of the Koricancha Temple of the Sun and from its stones. Excavation is unearthing more of the five chambers of the Temple of the Sun, revealing the best Incan stonework to be seen in Cuzco. Cuzco Located at an altitude of 3,310 metres, Cuzco is one of the most beautiful and enchanting cities in South America, with outstanding natural scenery, ancient ruins and colonial architecture. Once the capital of the mighty Inca Empire, the Spanish conquistadors tried to recreate the city in the grand colonial style, but even today almost every central street has remains of Inca walls, arches and doorways and is a fascinating clash of pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial styles. Overnight hotel stay in Palacio Del Inka, A Luxury Collection Hotel. (B,L)

Due to the size of bunk bed cabin (5.5 square metres) / twin bed cabin (7.4 square metres) and for your maximum comfort, we recommend that you pack a small suitcase or cabin bag for your overnight stay on the train. This can be stored underneath your bed, while larger luggage can be left in a secure storage room on the train. The train departs Cuzco at approximately 11am for the journey south-east towards Puno. After lunch on board, disembark the train and visit the fascinating pre-Incan archaeological site of Raqchi. The train will continue over the La Raya mountain range, one of the highest points on the route. Here, you can see the snow-capped peaks rising to 5,500 metres. Enjoy sunset followed by a three-course dinner served in the dining car. The train will continue on to Lake Titicaca where it will be stationary for the night. (B,L,D)

An early start to see sunrise over Lake Titicaca will be followed by breakfast in the dining car. Excursion: Full-day tour to the reed islands of Lake Titicaca and Taquile island (shared basis) Lake Titicaca has many floating islands, which are inhabited by the indigenous Uros people. For hundreds of years the livelihood of this 'water tribe' has been based on the benefits of the totora reed, which grows densely in the shallower areas of the lake. They use these to build their homes, boats and even the floating islands they live on, compressing them into virtually rigid surfaces, which drift around on the lake currents. The Uros people live by fishing and raising domestic fowl and they travel between their islands in tiny reed boats. The tour continues to Taquile island, situated about 45km from Puno with expansive views of the great lake and inhabited by Quechua-speaking communities. Taquile is just 1km wide and around 7km long, but home to Inca and pre-Inca ruins and Inca terracing. Through the generations, the islands' inhabitants have developed an efficient social system and a fine hand weaving technique. Farmers, fishermen and weavers wear distinctive outfits. Lunch will be provided at a private location on the island and in the afternoon the locals will demonstrate their traditional music and ancient weaving techniques.
In the afternoon, tea will be served at the Lake Titicaca station before the train departs for the Arequipa region. In the evening a farewell dinner will be served. (B,L,D)

You will be met by your Cox & Kings representative and taken to your hotel, a journey of approximately 10 minutes. Overnight stay at the Wyndham Costa del Sol Arequipa. Situated 1,029 kilometres south of Lima, Arequipa stands in a beautiful valley at the foot of the snow capped El Misti volcano. The city served as a major crossroads in the Inca period as it stood on the main highways to Cuzco from both Chile and the coast. A Spanish colony was established here in 1540 on orders of conquistador Francisco Pizarro, and modern Arequipa retains an interesting blend of Incan and Spanish colonial heritage. It is arguably Peru's most strikingly beautiful city, with its leafy squares, fine colonial architecture and many old and interesting churches built of sillar, a pearly white volcanic stone almost exclusively used in the construction of this city. (B,L)

Today you will visit the 16th-century Santa Catalina convent, which was opened to the public in 1970 after 400 years as a cloister. A walled city within the city, the convent is made up of a maze of cobblestone streets with spacious patios, gardens, kitchens and slave quarters. Entrance requirements at the convent were among the strictest in Peru. Novices, daughters of aristocrats, had to prove Spanish origin and come up with a dowry of at least 1,000 gold pesos. Once home to up to 500 nuns, now about 20 still reside in one section of the convent, while the remainder has been left as a magnificent museum.
Later, visit the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries. Juanita (also known as the 'Ice Maiden') was discovered on the top of Mount Ampato, near Arequipa, in 1995 by Johan Reinhard. She was 12 to 14 years old when she was sacrificed and is believed to have died about 500 years ago. She has been preserved in a glass box at sub-zero temperatures along with displays of amazingly well preserved clothes, jewellery and weavings that provide a vivid insight into the past. Other equally interesting and well preserved locally found mummies are kept in the museum and are periodically exhibited. Juanita is not guaranteed to be on display as she is often taken away for research or for preservation; however, other mummies and all the artefacts remain so the museum is well worth a visit at any time.
