The first German colonists arrived to this area in 1852, and have remained to the present day, a small but influential percentage of the 130,000 inhabitants. The town spreads along a narrow seaboard and climbs the slopes enclosing it to the north. Since 1985, the city has experienced considerable growth and development, fueled by more than 30 salmon farms, in addition to forestry, fishing industries and service companies. The colourful capital of Peru, Lima has long been renowned for its rich history.
Transfer to the luxury Country Club Lima Hotel for your two night stay. Begin your 7 night Machu Picchu Adventure Land Tour with Cox & Kings
Visit the colonial district of Lima and the magnificent 17th-century San Francisco Monastery with its unique cloisters, and then stroll to the Plaza Mayor (formerly the Plaza de Armas) to see the Government Palace and the cathedral. You will also visit Casa Solariega de Aliaga, a superbly preserved colonial mansion that has been occupied by 16 generations of the same family since 1535. Don Jeronimo De Aliaga was one of the 13 commanders to arrive with Pizarro and was given land around the main square to build his house when Lima was founded. The mansion is decorated with ornate antiques and fine furnishings and it is easy to get a feel of the history of the family.
Continue to the Larco Museum located in the district of Pueblo Libre. Housed in an 18th century colonial mansion, the museum holds the best private collection of pre-Columbian art in Peru. The displays include a large collection of ceramics, textiles and erotic pottery, as well as some gold and silver pieces. The exhibits featured are largely from the Moche culture (600 - 1000 AD) and the Chimu culture (1000 - 1400 AD) from Northern Peru. There are also artefacts from the Nazca and Inca periods. Lunch will be taken at the Café de Museo Larco.
(p) Spend the afternoon at your leisure. (B,L)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Cuzco, Peru. (B)
Upon arrival , transfer to your hotel in the Sacred Valley, Peru for your two night stay. The Sacred Valley of the Incas is the perfect place to explore, relax and unwind either before or after your visit to Machu Picchu. An area of outstanding natural beauty set against a backdrop of the Andes mountains, the fertile Urubamba Valley is surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks and is home to some first-class hotels, many renowned for their spas. For the more actively minded the region is full of sites of great cultural and historical interest such as traditional villages, indigenous markets, and Inca sites, making it ideal for a longer stay.
Gateway to the Sacred Valley, the town of Pisac was of supreme importance in Inca times. It was the site of one of the most important fortresses built to guard the capital of the empire, and the archaeological site, at the top of a hill, features splendid Inca walls, a few towers and a sundial. The town of Pisac today is a sleepy hamlet of brown adobe buildings with faded red tiled roofs and narrow cobblestone streets. A mixture of Inca and colonial influences, parts of the town date from the colonial era and, in the church, Mass is still said in Quechua. Every day, the town has a market in the main square and this is renowned for its colour and vibrance. People from the local villages, many of them in traditional dress, travel to the town and the many wares on offer include food items, handicrafts, ponchos and rugs.
The tour continues to Ollantaytambo, a small town built around a superbly preserved Inca fortress. The fortress guarded the entrance to this part of the valley and protected it from possible invasion from the lower jungles. The central part of the ruins is the Intihuatana group of temples and rock outcrops, which reveal the most magnificent Inca masonry. The design and foundations of the majority of the buildings in the town also date from the Inca era, when Ollantaytambo was a strategic military, religious and agricultural centre. Wayra Ranch at the Sol y Luna hotel, Urubamba features a large picnic-style seating area with benches, tables, and a brick oven set across a large lawn edged with trees and stables for the famous Peruvian Paso horses. The ranch is named Wayra meaning 'wind', in honour of this distinctive breed of horse, whose unique 'paso llano' gait makes it one of the smoothest and most comfortable riding horses in the world. The ranch offers a delicious buffet lunch with a spectacular Peruvian Paso Horse exhibition, a folklore show and a marvellous musical show using the Cajon, a Peruvian drum instrument. (B,L)
After breakfast, transfer to Rio Sagrado station, board the Belmond Hiram Bingham, this luxury train is operated by the Belmond group and is named after the American explorer who rediscovered the ruins of Machu Picchu. The train has two elegantly decorated dining carriages and one bar car with seating area. Brunch will be served on board as you pass through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Machu Picchu. (B,BR)
On arrival at Aguas Calientes, you will transfer by shared bus to Machu Picchu citadel for a half day tour. The Incas left legends of forgotten cities and treasures, the most incredible of which is Machu Picchu. It lay hidden from the world until its rediscovery by the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Enjoy a guided tour of the site consisting of more than 200 buildings of perfectly chiselled unmortared stone, as well as baths, temples, altars and houses constructed in terraces and connected by stairways carved from solid rock. After your excursion, enjoy a cocktail at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge located just steps from the entrance to the ruins. Take the bus down to the station at Aguas Calientes.
After, transfer to a hotel for your overnight stay. (D)
After breakfast, you will have time to explore these mysterious ruins again on your own. After, board the Belmond Hiram Bingham train for your return journey to the Rio Sagrado stop in the Sacred Valley. A three course dinner will be served onboard the train. Later, transfer to the luxury Palacio del Inka Hotel for your overnight stay. (B,D)
Begin your tour with a visit to Loreto Alley, an impressive part of the old town with its remarkable Inca walls. Continue to the Santo Domingo Monastery which was built in the 17th century on the foundations of the Koricancha Temple of the Sun, using original materials. Excavation is unearthing more of the five chambers of the temple, revealing some of the best Inca stonework to be seen in Cuzco.
After this, you will visit the old quarters of San Blas which dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Stroll through the many handicraft shops and native art galleries in the small square where many local crafts can be found, such as earthenware, paintings, ceramics, sculptures, wood carvings and textiles. The beautiful colonial church houses an impressive pulpit but is currently still closed for renovations. You will therefore visit the Santa Catalina Monastery instead and see its ornate arcades, murals and chapel with baroque frescoes.
Return to Cuzco's old town, passing through Hatunrumiyoc Street with its famous 12-angle stone. The heart of Cuzco, as in Inca days, is the Plaza de Armas. On the northern side of this, a visit will be made to the magnificent cathedral, built in the early 17th century on the site of the Inca Palace of Viracocha. The high altar is made of solid silver and the altar retablo behind it is a masterpiece of native wood carving. In the sacristy are paintings of all the bishops of Cuzco and a painting of Christ attributed to Van Dyck. Much venerated is the crucifix of El Senor de los Temblores, the object of many pilgrimages and viewed all over Peru as a guardian against earthquakes.
Lunch will be at the Cicciolina restaurant, located in an historic Cusco mansion. (B,L)
After lunch, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima, Peru.
