24 hours in Rio de Janeiro

How to spend 24 hours in one of the most recognisable cities in the world

Published on 25 Oct 2024

One of the most recognisable seaside cities in the world, Rio de Janeiro is famed for its beaches, after all, everyone has heard of Copacabana. From its mountains to favelas, its love of football to its 100 or so Samba schools, Rio de Janeiro is full of surprises. Most cruise lines overnight in port here, giving you plenty of time to explore.

Here are our top picks for what to do with 24 hours in Rio:

Explore beach bliss

Whether it’s one of the more popular beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema or a quieter, less well-known option such as Barra da Tijuca or Praia Vermelha, find a slice of beach culture during your time here. You could enjoy breakfast with a view, explore the shore-side shops and restaurants, join in a beach volleyball game or simply jump in the surf.

Discover Sugarloaf Mountain

Climb or take the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain, and not only will you see one of the most iconic landmarks in Brazil, but you’ll also get incredible views of Corcovado Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue. The sunset from here is simply spectacular, and if your cruise ship docks overnight, we suggest making the most of it.

Food glorious food

There are street food vendors found throughout the city, selling everything from bite-sized kibe balls to pastels and tapiocas and, of course, Brazilian barbeque. You’ll find plenty of bakery shelves to browse, and, if in doubt, head to a beloved boteco, a traditional bar not dissimilar to an Irish pub, for tire-gostos (snacks) and, of course, a caipirinha.
