Books to take on your next cruise

Our top picks for your next voyage

Published on 17 Jan 2022

What could be better than relaxing out on deck with a gentle breeze tousling your hair as you’re transported to a new and exciting fictional world? We love reading at ROL, a good book is one of the very first things we make sure to pack before heading off on a cruise. From fantasy to historical fiction, here are our top picks for your next voyage (chosen by ROL team members themselves):

Small Pleasures

Clare Chambers

Recommended by Olivia:

Small Pleasures had been on my radar for a while but was pipped to the post by other books time and time again. Oh, how annoyed I was that I didn’t start it sooner! Set in the 1950s, Small Pleasures follows the life of Jean Swinney, a feature writer on a local paper whose existence is limited. When Jean meets Gretchen Tilbury, who responds to a feature in the paper, her life is turned upside down. Small Pleasures is charming, surprising and thought-provoking. I implore everyone to read it.”

The Midnight Library

Matt Haig

Recommended by Gemma:

“I read The Midnight Library on holiday and loved it. It’s a book about life choices and how things could have turned out depending on different paths you could have taken. It highlighted how it’s never too late to do something and that life shouldn’t be lived full of regrets. The Midnight Library is impossible to put down.”

A Brief History of Time

Stephen Hawking

Recommended by Amber:

“One book that I read every year without fail is Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time. I can understand why this book wouldn’t be for everyone but the larger than life theories about our origins in the universe really inspired me to think bigger. It gets your imagination going, clears out the cobwebs and really does make you consider the wonders of the world around you.”

Pachinko

Min Jin Lee

Recommended by Fran:

“The epic story that Min Jin Lee weaves transports you through eight decades and four generations of a Korean family as they immigrate to Japan amidst political turmoil and the events that happen throughout. I would absolutely recommend Pachinkoto those who enjoy delving deep into historical fiction and appreciate the beauty that can be found when discovering culture and an era so different to their own.”
