MS Estrela: A new star on the Douro

A shining new star is born

The christening of MS Estrela in the heart of the Douro Valley was more than just the launch of a beautiful new ship - it was a celebration of everything we at ROL Cruise love about river cruising with APT. With just 50 guests invited, including some of APT Cruising’s top partners and the media, it felt personal, special and truly memorable.

This wasn’t your typical ship unveiling. Over the course of the event, we were given the chance to explore MS Estrela up close, and she’s a showstopper! The ship has a clean, modern design that fits seamlessly into the landscape, with soft tones and thoughtful details everywhere you look. From the largest swimming pool on the Douro and a fun little putting green to stylish bars and al fresco dining areas, the ship has a laid-back luxury feel we loved.

Of course, the big moment was when Lucy Huxley, Editor-in-Chief of Travel Weekly, officially christened MS Estrela. Lucy’s speech struck a chord - she talked about the outstanding service guests can expect on board, and she was spot on. Every crew member we met went out of their way to make the experience exceptional.

Paul Melinis, APT’s Managing Director, shared how MS Estrela represents a new era for both APT and Travelmarvel. Designed for comfort, connection and discovery, the ship captures the spirit of modern river cruising perfectly. “Estrela” means star in Portuguese, and she really does shine.

Cruising the Douro River with APT Cruising

As part of the celebrations, we also got to experience a taste of MS Estrela’s Douro Discovery itinerary. And what a taste it was!

Sailing through this part of Portugal feels like stepping into a postcard - rolling hills covered in vineyards, sleepy riverside villages, and light that seems to make everything glow. We were lucky enough to visit Quinta de Pacheca, one of the Douro’s most iconic wine estates. The Port tasting there was a real highlight.

The setting alone is stunning - think terraced vines and rustic charm - and the tasting itself was immersive and relaxed. We tried everything from bold, fruity ruby Ports to smooth, complex aged Tawnies, all while learning more about the traditions and craftsmanship behind each bottle. Whether you’re a Port lover or new to the drink, it’s an experience that stays with you.

(Just a quick note: the Port tasting is included for APT Cruising guests, but is an optional extra for Travelmarvel).

Life onboard MS Estrela

MS Estrela has been designed to reflect her surroundings, and it really shows. Her soft cream exterior blends beautifully with the Douro Valley scenery. While inside, the ship is full of elegant, calming spaces that invite you to slow down and enjoy the view.

The sun deck is a favourite spot - perfect for lounging with a drink in hand as the river rolls by. Inside, the main lounge and bar offer a cosy space to relax with a coffee or cocktail, while still making the most of those ever-changing views.

There are 58 cabins on board, accommodating just 116 guests, which makes the whole experience feel intimate and unhurried. Whether you go for a window stateroom, a French balcony suite with its floor-to-ceiling views, or splash out on the stunning Owner’s Suite, you’ll find everything designed with comfort and space in mind.

MS Estrela is a shining example of APT Cruising’s dedication to creating exceptional travel experiences, and its debut is bound to leave guests with cherished memories for years to come.
