Queen Victoria mini cruise

Staff stories: A mini cruise aboard Queen Victoria

Sailing from Southampton to Amsterdam aboard the traditional yet stylish Queen Victoria

Published on 16 Jan 2023

Hi Ally! Recently, you sailed aboard Cunard’s Queen Victoria. Can you tell us what she’s like?

Queen Victoria has a timeless feel, her decor is classic and traditional yet stylish. There is an undeniable sense of warmth and grandeur from the moment you step aboard. Throughout the ship, you can expect to find marble flooring, thick curtains, plush carpets and stunning chandeliers and light features - all adding to the splendour.

It was my first time sailing on a Cunard ship and the experience was made even more magical by the beautiful Christmas decorations that had been put up. The tall Christmas trees, wreaths, nutcracker statues and the abundance of twinkly lights made for a setting that rivalled those that appear in classic Christmas movies.

What was the atmosphere like onboard?

The ship had a warm, inviting and simply unforgettable atmosphere. From the moment we arrived right up until we disembarked, the service we received from the friendly crew was impeccable and this undoubtedly contributed to the incredible atmosphere. One of the nicest things about the ship was that there was truly something for everyone and depending on where you were on the ship, the atmosphere could vary - but in the most perfect way. So, if you wanted vibrancy and excitement, you’d find plenty of areas on the ship. Similarly, if you craved quiet time, there were many tranquil spaces to escape to.

You stayed in a Princess Grill Suite, wow! Can you describe it?

Staying in a Princess Grill Suite was an amazing experience. The bedroom area features an extremely comfortable bed that can be configured into a king-size or two single beds. To ensure you have the best night's sleep possible, the suite includes a pillow menu that allows guests to choose the perfect type for them. There is also a lounge area, wardrobe area and a bathroom with a bath and overhead shower. My favourite feature of the suite was the private balcony area - one morning I sat and watched the most incredible sunrise.

Cunard is renowned for its fantastic cuisine! Which restaurant was your favourite?

It’s genuinely difficult to choose just one as every restaurant that I had the pleasure of dining in was equally as great. If I really had to choose, I would have to say the Verandah Steakhouse on Deck 2. It’s fantastic with lots of special touches and tasty food. I went for the Wagyu steak as my main and it was delicious! In each restaurant, the staff were wonderful, they were so attentive and delivered exceptional service.

What was the entertainment like onboard? Did you see any shows?

There was an extensive entertainment programme onboard that truly catered for everyone. There were talks, art and dance classes, exercise programmes, planned social activities and so much more. I went to the Royal Court Theatre to watch One Way or Another. Described as being a ‘tour-de-force of song and dance,’ it was a brilliant, high-energy show.
