My time on board Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral was a memorable journey filled with warm hospitality, charming Mediterranean destinations, and the timeless charm of classic cruising.
I was fortunate enough to join Balmoral for part of its Grand Mediterranean Voyage during the fly-cruise season. Travelling on a chartered Jet2 flight from London Stansted (with Manchester also offered as a departure option), the journey began smoothly.
After passing through immigration at Málaga Airport and collecting my luggage, I simply followed the numerous guides holding clear Fred. Olsen signs to the awaiting coach, which whisked us off to the Port of Málaga. Port security was a breeze, and we were welcomed with vibrant traditional Spanish dancers and music. Check-in was quick and seamless, and before I knew it, I was on board and heading to my cabin.
I stayed in a spacious Superior Suite enhanced by the Suite Dreams package, which included welcome treats such as sparkling wine, fresh fruit, and flowers, plus comforts such as luxury towels, a bathrobe, slippers, binoculars, and handy reference guides. Each day brought 5pm canapés and a newsletter, while practical touches like compact umbrellas, a minibar, and a large wardrobe added ease. The suite offered a double bed, a separate sitting area, a private balcony, and a well-designed bathroom with his-and-hers sinks. With perks like complimentary pressing, laundry discounts, daily refreshed water, and inclusive room service, my stay on board was exceptionally comfortable and memorable.
While on board Balmoral, we enjoyed evening dining in the Ballindalloch Restaurant, where the menus featured local dishes inspired by the ports we visited. One lunchtime, we headed to the Spey and Avon Restaurant at the aft of the ship, enjoying views of the Rock as we sailed away from Gibraltar; here, we could choose to order from the menu or browse the buffet. We also dined at the Thistle Restaurant, a more relaxed option where we helped ourselves to a variety of dishes. The quality and variety of the food made every dining experience a pleasure.
We enjoyed a wide range of entertainment on board, with some activities included in the cruise fare and others available at an additional cost. Each evening brought a new performance in the Neptune Lounge and the main theatre, from traditional local singers and dancers in Málaga to a comedian and even a musical performance by the Cruise Director, all of which were thoroughly enjoyable. We also joined a Cocktail Masterclass that was great fun, took part in Sangria Tasting where we learned how to create different varieties, and joined a behind-the-scenes tour that gave us the rare chance to visit the Bridge and explore the galley - both of which were incredibly impressive!
During our call to Gibraltar, I joined a Fred. Olsen shore excursion that took us up the iconic Rock of Gibraltar, offering spectacular views over the strait. We explored the impressive St. Michael’s Cave, its dramatic chambers beautifully lit to highlight the natural formations, before heading to the Upper Rock to meet Gibraltar’s famous resident monkeys. Watching the playful Barbary macaques up close was a real highlight and made the excursion both memorable and great fun.
In Lisbon, I joined a fantastic tuk-tuk tour arranged through Fred. Olsen, which turned out to be one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the city. Our driver navigated the narrow, winding streets with ease, taking us through colourful neighbourhoods, up to scenic viewpoints, and past some of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks. The open-sided tuk-tuk made it easy to take in the city's sights, creating a fun, relaxed, and memorable way to experience Portugal’s vibrant capital.
Overall, a voyage on board Balmoral with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines offers the perfect blend of comfort and exploration. From the comfort and thoughtful touches of the Superior Suite to the varied dining, lively entertainment, and unforgettable shore excursions, every aspect of the cruise was carefully designed to create a seamless and memorable experience. The combination of attentive service, Mediterranean scenery, and unique cultural experiences ashore made this journey truly special - a classic cruise in the very best sense, leaving me with lasting memories and a desire to sail with Fred. Olsen again.
