Published on 12 Sep 2024
Booking the trip of a lifetime should leave you feeling euphoric. There are so many exciting things to organise, from booking incredible excursions to iconic landmarks or beautiful beaches to researching local hotspots and creating a comprehensive packing list. But for many, the elation sparked by planning and booking a trip can be quickly dimmed by the thought of leaving furry friends behind. Not only do pet owners struggle with the guilt of going on holiday, but they can also be plagued with the tricky task of finding someone to look after their precious pooch. Travelling the world with a pet is often something that many wish to do and depending on who you sail with, that could become a reality. Here, we discuss everything you need to know about the possibility of cruising with your pet.
Yes, there are some cruise lines which allow dogs aboard specific ships. Cunard leads the pack in pet-friendly cruising, as the only luxury cruise line that invites both cats and dogs to join you on board. Your four-legged friends can travel across the Atlantic in style onboard the iconic Queen Mary 2. Owners may visit their pet up to four times a day and have a dedicated owner's lounge to unwind in. Whilst animals are not permitted in staterooms or public areas, there is plenty of space for them to play in the allocated zones. With 24 kennels available, and only one animal permitted in each, you must book in advance.
Most major cruise lines will allow service dogs on board. However, it’s imperative to familiarise yourself with each cruise line’s rules and policies surrounding this. Typically, a service dog can be classified as a highly-trained animal that can perform tasks to help people with disabilities or medical conditions. Service dogs are usually allowed to accompany owners to public areas of the ship including lounges and dining areas, but it is certainly worth asking for a definitive list before embarking. Unfortunately, emotional support dogs are not currently allowed on board.
The requirements to take a service dog aboard a cruise ship may vary from cruise line to cruise line. You may need an identification card, or passport, for your dog, as well as all relevant veterinarian information and records. It may also be essential for you to ensure that service animals are kept on a lead when in public areas. You will also need to pack everything that the assistance dog will need.
