What to see in Rome (Civitavecchia)

Rome, the Eternal City, is a captivating blend of ancient history and modern vitality. Iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and Vatican City coexist with bustling piazzas, world-class cuisine and charming neighbourhoods. With its timeless allure, Rome invites travellers to explore its rich heritage and savour la dolce vita.

Just 40 kilometres from Civitavecchia, the town of Tarquinia awaits, offering an immersive journey into the world of the Etruscans, one of Italy's most mysterious ancient civilisations. Begin your exploration in Tarquinia by visiting the Etruscan Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you'll find a labyrinth of underground burial chambers adorned with intricate frescoes that depict scenes of Etruscan life, mythology and beliefs. The most famous tomb is the Tomb of the Augurs, with its vivid depictions of Etruscan rituals and daily activities.

Cerveteri, located about 30 kilometres from Civitavecchia, is another Etruscan gem that offers a unique glimpse into Italy's ancient past. The Banditaccia Necropolis in Cerveteri is a UNESCO-listed site and one of the most significant Etruscan burial grounds in Italy. Unlike the underground tombs of Tarquinia, the Banditaccia Necropolis features a network of rock-cut chamber tombs, resembling an ancient city of the dead. Wander through the labyrinthine paths to discover the various tomb types, ranging from simple chambers to more elaborate, multi-room structures.

For a change of pace and scenery, head to Santa Severa, a coastal town just 20 kilometres from Civitavecchia. Here, you can combine beach relaxation with a visit to a medieval castle. The focal point of Santa Severa is the Castello di Santa Severa, a medieval castle perched on the shoreline. This well-preserved fortress offers a glimpse into Italy's medieval history and maritime heritage. Explore the castle's towers, courtyards and rooms, which now house the Santa Severa Castle Museum. The museum features archaeological finds from the surrounding area and offers insights into the castle's history.
