ROL Cruise recommends…

1. Keep your trip on track at the scenic railway

The Flåm Line is a true feat of engineering: the steepest regular railway in the world, full of bends and twisting tunnels that spiral in and out of mountainsides around the village. Just as impressive are the views on the 45-minute journey up to the settlement of Myrdal, consisting of deep ravines, lush greenery and snowy slopes. The 20km track rises to 867m above sea level, with the train slowing at the most picturesque points and even stopping for photo opportunities at the thundering Kjosfossen waterfall.

2. Have a mountainside cycling adventure

If you’re feeling fit, how about skipping the train journey for a spot of biking on a stretch of Norway’s most spectacular cycle ride? Rallarvegen, or the Navvies’ Road, was the access track when the railway was first built and takes you past gorgeous green valleys, crystal clear streams and the occasional goat herd. Ring ahead to reserve a mountain bike in Myrdal, and allow two to three hours to drink in the stunning scenery on the almost entirely downhill ride. Simply return your bike to Flåm station after your trip.

3. Delve into Flåm’s unique history

While the breathtaking Aurlandsfjord and its surrounding area are natural wonders, Flåm’s human history is well worth investigating too. The old station building houses the free Flåmsbana Museum, which details the genius and determination behind the railroad construction that began in 1924. As well as fascinating displays and photos of the time, enjoy personal anecdotes from people involved with the railway from its beginnings. Outside, the beauty of the stroll to Flåm Church, following the river past waterfalls, farms and colourful cabins, is matched only by the 350-year-old building itself. The handiwork of master builder Magne Essen, the delightful wooden structure boasts intricately decorative walls depicting the nature outside.

4. Head for the hills

Grab your boots and a free walking map from the information centre, and a world of wonderful walks awaits. Head up to Fretheim Farm to gaze at cloud-covered peaks and see the village from on high, or take the train to nearby Vatnahalsen or Håreina for a number of hikes that wend their way through the magnificent mountains. Also make time to head to Stegastein viewpoint for an unsurpassed panoramic view of the fjord – you can either take the bus there or hire mini electric cars in Flåm with in-built GPS.
