What to see in Arles

Arles, located in the heart of France's Provence region, is a city where every street, building and vista tells a story. Renowned for its Roman heritage and as a source of inspiration for Van Gogh, Arles offers a diverse array of experiences for visitors.

One of the city's most significant attractions is the Arles Amphitheatre. This ancient Roman structure, dating back to the 1st century AD, is a marvel of ancient engineering and design. The amphitheatre, capable of seating over 20,000 spectators, was originally used for chariot races and gladiatorial combat. Today, it remains a vibrant part of Arles' culture, hosting various events such as plays, concerts and traditional bullfighting, reflecting the region's unique cultural blend. Visitors can explore the grandstands, the arena and the underground galleries, where gladiators once prepared for battle, immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of Roman history.

Another must-visit site in Arles is the Fondation Vincent van Gogh. This art centre is dedicated to the works of Van Gogh, who spent some of the most productive and turbulent years of his life in Arles. The foundation not only displays several of Van Gogh's paintings but also features exhibitions of contemporary art inspired by his work. Visiting this centre provides insight into Van Gogh's artistic journey and his impact on modern art. The foundation also highlights the landscapes and scenes around Arles that inspired some of Van Gogh's most famous works, including Starry Night Over the Rhône and Café Terrace at Night.

Just a short walk from the centre of Arles is the ancient Roman Theatre. Built during the reign of Augustus, it was once capable of holding 10,000 spectators and was used for various forms of entertainment, including plays, concerts and poetry readings. Though much of its original grandeur has been lost over time, with many stones repurposed for other buildings, the theatre remains a fascinating historical site. The remains of the stage and the two marble columns give a sense of the theatre's past splendour. In the summer months, the theatre comes alive with performances, allowing visitors to experience entertainment as the Romans once did.
