An ancient heritage site

ROL Cruise recommends…

Home to the historic painter

Arles was home to Vincent Van Gogh between 1888 and 1889 where he produced over 300 paintings and drawings from his French dwelling. Wander the streets and marvel at his famous works of art that cover the sun-baked houses along its small, windy streets or visit the rich museum collections where you may see some of his more prolific works of art.

Architecture to rival them all

Arles historic monuments were named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981 and it remains home to some of the world finest and best-kept architecture. Arles is home to some really important roman remnants including The Gallo-Roman Theatre, The Amphitheatre and The Alyscamps which can all be admired on a visit to this rich and vibrant city.

A hotspot for modern culture

Known as a cultural hotspot in the country of France, Arles is the host destination for festivals and events all year round, including the Rencontres d’Arles and the Bullfight, where a team of athletic men attempt to remove a tassel from the bull’s horns. It was also named the European Capital of Culture in 2013 after the region held a year-long series of cultural events.

A city surrounded by water

The city of Arles is situated on the River Rhone, a canal of water that runs from Switzerland to the south of France. The river has played host to the cities day to day life for hundreds of years and to this day guides cruises through its awe-inspiring waters. Alongside them, local fisherman trawl the waters looking for fresh-water fish as they have done for thousands of years.
