ROL Cruise recommends…
Stand on the border of two countries
Instead of gliding over the Danube on your cruise, cross it whilst in Giurgiu. Visit Brucke der Freundschaft, ‘Friendship Bridge’, that not only crosses the Danube but connects Romania and Bulgaria. Bring your passport with you to go all the way across and explore Bulgaria for part of your stay, or to get a unique view of this beautiful river.
See everything from Le Tour de l’Horloge
This ex-fire tower is now the pride of the city. Converted into a viewing tower with an observation deck, enjoy a coffee at the bottom of the tower and watch the city life unfold around you. Right in the centre of town, this is an ideal place to people watch and soak in the life of Giurgiu.
Try traditional Romanian cuisine
It’s fair to say Romanian cuisine is not something that has made a name for itself around Europe. However, this does not mean it should be avoided. Especially when you are here in the colder months, a warming dish from a local restaurant will be sure to surprise you. Indulging in local delicacies is a must for an authentic culinary experience. Be sure to try Sarmale, a traditional kind of cabbage roll.
Cross the border to Ruse
If you do opt to walk the Brucke der Freundschaft, or cross it by other means, you’ll be greeted on the south side of the Danube by Ruse, Bulgaria’s most prominent port city. Although the borders are close, the cultures are very different on both sides of the river and it will provide a completely different experience to Giurgiu.
