Located at the meeting point of the River Krems and Danube in northwest Austria, Krems an der Donau (known more commonly as Krems) is a historical town going back centuries. Krems used to be a fortress around 995 AD before it was made into a town around the 12th century. Wandering in the streets of Krems you will see medieval fortifications such as the Gozzoburg, the Pulverturm and the Steiner Gate while there is a variety of churches, among those the St. Veit parish church which is one of the country’s oldest Baroque churches.

Positioned centrally in the Austrian wine-making region, a visit to Winzer Krems for a tour of the local vineyard is a must for any budding sommelier (or any wine lover!) Walk through the vineyards and learn about the winemaking process in full before sampling a glass (and perhaps buying a bottle to take home too.)
Castle lovers rejoice as there are plenty of options around Krems. Whether you choose to visit Aggstein Castle, a 12th-century structure which offers stunning views over the Danube or Schonbuhel Castle, a fairy-tale castle by the river, then you’re sure to have your breath taken away.
Many more historical cities around Europe were once built within city walls, and now, with the well preserved, these walls can still be visited. In Krems, the best way to experience this is by visiting Steiner Tor. Steiner Tor is one of the four original gates that surrounded the city and allowed access in and out of the wall. Although only one has been preserved, it is still a marvel to see.
For those who want to enjoy the more light-hearted side or art, we suggest a visit to the Karikaturemuseum. The cartoon museum and the only Austrian museum for satirical art is a fantastic way to spend some of your time in Krems. Filled with mainly political caricature, humorous drawings and comics, there is plenty to keep the eyes occupied, and provide a good chuckle!
