Get to know La-La Land

The busy City of Los Angeles is recognised by various names; City of Angels, Entertainment Capital of the World, Tinseltown, La-La Land. Its many monikers reflect its status as different things to different people, within distinct regions such as Little Tokyo, Chinatown, Echo Park, Los Feliz and Downtown. Of course, it is best known as the home of Hollywood - the destination of choice for anyone with dreams of getting their name up in lights. Synonymous with the movie-making industry since 1912, this  area of the city remains a tourist hotspot with many iconic attractions.

Follow the celebrity trail

Perched upon Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills, the giant white letters of the Hollywood sign can be seen for miles. It’s illegal to get too near, though hiking trails on the surrounding hills offer a closer look if the views from town aren’t quite enough. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is another must-see, with more than 2,500 five-pointed stars emblazoned with the names of notable actors, directors, musicians and characters. Follow the celebrity trail along the pavements of Hollywood Boulevard for around one and a half miles, starting at The Four Ladies of Hollywood statue. En route you will pass the famous Roosevelt Hotel and have the chance to view the autographs, hand and footprints of notable artists outside the TCL Chinese Theatre. If you’re lucky, you may even get to pose with a lookalike of your idol.

Seek out glamour, culture and architecture

Follow in the footsteps of the L.A. elite with a visit to glamorous Beverly Hills. Browse the designer boutiques of palm-lined Rodeo Drive, then follow the line of luxury supercars past the gated mansions of the rich and famous. Head up to The Getty to view fabulous artworks in inspiring surroundings, then travel the Santa Monica Boulevard until you reach the beach. Along the Californian coast, Pacific views and soft sands make an inviting backdrop to the well-known ferris wheel of Santa Monica Pier, while trendy locals cruise the Venice Beach boardwalk and eccentric Muscle Beach. A little further south is the World Cruise Centre at San Pedro and the port of Long Beach. Here you’ll find the permanently docked Queen Mary; take the opportunity to tour this well-preserved Art Deco maritime masterpiece.
