What to see in Oban

Oban, a charming coastal town in the Argyll and Bute region of Scotland, is renowned for its picturesque scenery and as a gateway to the Hebrides. The town, with its bustling port and stunning natural setting, offers a variety of experiences for visitors, from historical exploration to enjoying local Scottish cuisine.

One of the top attractions in Oban is the Oban Distillery, nestled right in the heart of the town near the port. As one of Scotland’s oldest sources of single-malt Scotch whisky, the distillery offers an informative and enjoyable tour for visitors. These tours provide an in-depth look at the traditional art of whisky making, from mashing and fermenting to distilling and ageing. Visitors have the opportunity to witness the entire process up close and learn about the history and importance of whisky in Scottish culture. The experience is topped off with a tasting session, where guests can sample some of the distillery's finest whiskies. The Oban Distillery, with its rich history and excellent produce, is an essential visit for anyone looking to understand Scotland’s whisky heritage.

Just a short distance from the port, McCaig’s Tower, an iconic landmark of Oban, offers panoramic views of the town and the surrounding islands. This colossal structure, inspired by the Roman Colosseum, was built in the early 20th century by local philanthropist John Stuart McCaig. The intention was to provide a lasting monument to his family and create work for local stonemasons. Although the structure was never fully completed, the tower’s gardens and the encompassing circular wall make it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a picnic while taking in the breathtaking views of Oban Bay and the Atlantic Islands.

Another fascinating experience near Oban port is a visit to the nearby Isle of Kerrera. Just a short ferry ride from the town, Kerrera is a peaceful and picturesque island, perfect for a day trip. The island is relatively untouched by modern developments, offering a tranquil escape and a chance to connect with Scotland’s natural beauty. One of the main attractions on the island is Gylen Castle, a 16th-century ruin perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the sea. The island also offers several walking trails, which take visitors past scenic spots and provide opportunities to spot local wildlife, including seals and various bird species. Kerrera’s Tea Garden and Bunkhouse offer delightful local food and refreshments, making it an ideal spot to relax after exploring the island.
