What to see in Rotterdam

Rotterdam, known for its architectural innovation and maritime efficiency, is a city that never fails to impress. The largest port in Europe, located in Rotterdam, serves not just as an industrial hub but also as the heartbeat of a city brimming with culture, history and modern attractions.

One of the most striking features of Rotterdam is its architecture and a visit to the Cube Houses is a must. Designed by architect Piet Blom and located near the Old Harbour, these houses are tilted at a 45-degree angle, creating a unique optical illusion. The design represents trees in a forest, contributing to the city's innovative architectural landscape. One of these houses is open to the public, allowing visitors to experience the interior of these extraordinary structures and gain insight into living in a cube-shaped space.

Another not-to-be-missed experience is a visit to the Erasmus Bridge, affectionately known as ‘The Swan’ due to its graceful asymmetrical design. This stunning piece of engineering connects the north and south parts of Rotterdam and has become a symbol of the city. The bridge offers an excellent vantage point for viewing the cityscape and the bustling activity of the port. Nearby, the Rotterdam skyline along the Maas River makes for a picturesque walk, especially in the evening when the city lights reflect beautifully on the water.

The Maritime Museum Rotterdam, located close to the port, provides a deep dive into the city's rich maritime history. The museum's extensive collection includes historic vessels, maritime paintings and scale models that narrate the story of Rotterdam's evolution from a small fishing village to a major global maritime centre. The museum also features interactive exhibits and an open-air Maritime Museum Harbour, which contains a collection of historic ships and cranes that visitors can explore. This museum is not only a tribute to the city's maritime heritage but also an educational experience, making it an ideal visit for all ages.
