The streets of Sorrento are filled with churches, the oldest one being Duomo dei San Filippo e Giacomo. The church was first built around the 11th century and rebuilt in the 15th century. Outside the church you will see a colourful three-story bell tower with a clock, the base of its bell tower dates back to the Roman Empire!
Sorrento has plenty of museums as well. If you like your history you will certainly enjoy a visit to the Correale Museum and the Wood Inlay Museum which provide an insight into the culture and art of Sorrento. Sorrento is also very famous for its production of Limoncello, so why not have a walk though I Giardini di Cataldo - a lemon grove from where you can taste the liqueur along with other products such as marmalades. Also if you have the time, visit Via San Cesareo, where you can witness the craft of Limoncello making yourself and discover all its secrets!
It is widely known that Italian food is to die for; pizzas, pasta, seafood; take your pick! But since you are by Italy’s lacy shores, a place that must not be missed is Marina Grande- Sorrento’s fishing harbour where you can watch the sun set while dining at the nearby restaurants by the water’s edge. Taste some of the mussels, freshly caught fish and pure olive oil. One of the finest quality restaurants is Da Emilia, with reasonable prices and the freshest seafood. Everyone knows Italy is also famous for its ice cream so why not head to Primavera, Sorrento’s best gelateria, for some dessert? And let’s not forget the Italian wines! Make your way to Fuoro51 Wine Bar for an excellent glass of wine. The bar is slightly hidden so keep an eye out! If you are unsure which one to pick from the varieties they offer, the servers will be more than happy to help you find the perfect wine for your evening.
As for shopping, Sorrento made sure it is not to disappoint you. Take a walk down La Passegiatta, Sorrento’s most cosmopolitan shopping street, especially during the weekends. La Passegiatta’s atmosphere is very friendly, most of the shops though don’t open till 10am so why not enjoy an espresso in one of the coffee shops while you wait? Of course you might want to actually buy some Limoncello. Top quality Limoncello can be found in the shops by Piazza Tasso, the products originate from the Fattoria Terranova farm in Sant'Agata, which is located a few hours away from Sorrento. You will not just find Limoncello but also homemade jams, olive oil and a variety of cheeses to choose from. Inlaid intarsia furniture, or marquetry, is an ancient Sorrentine craft, if you want the real deal you should head down to Antonino Attardi’s or Massimo Gargiulo’s shops. Sorrento is a beautiful town filled with hidden gems, where every corner has something else to reveal.
