1. The Caribbean dream:

Search the internet for photos of The Bahamas and nine out of ten will show heavenly beaches sloping gently into turquoise seas. An abundance of beautiful coastal resorts doesn't fail to disappoint, with powdery sands and bath-warm waters awaiting expectant travellers. Sink your toes into the golden sands of Saunders Beach or Cable Beach, snorkel the calm shoreline or simply lay back and enjoy doing absolutely nothing.

2. Exploring Nassau:

The capital city of The Bahamas is Nassau, found on New Providence Island. A captivating fusion of old and new, the historic heritage of this island is sure to capture your heart. Admire the Georgian architecture and pretty pastel-coloured buildings as you stroll the 18th century colonial streets, then shop for locally-made souvenirs and handicrafts at the Straw Market on downtown Bay Street. Visit the Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation or climb the hand-carved Queen's Staircase for insight into Nassau's past, then head to one of the ancient forts for panoramic vistas.

3. The pirates’ paradise:

During the late 1600s and early 1700s, the numerous islands and shallow offshore waters of The Bahamas were a hive of activity for pirates, privateers and buccaneers. Learn more about the plundering exploits of notorious rogues like Blackbeard, Henry Morgan and Calico Jack Rackham at The Pirates of Nassau Museum. Discover how they ruled the waves for almost 40 years until Royal Governor Woodes Rogers offered the 'king's pardon' to all pirates who ceased immediately, then fought and hanged those who did not.

4. Island-hopping:

Just off the north shore of Nassau is Paradise Island, an outstandingly impressive islet known as Hog Island. Now connected by two small bridges, it is home to the popular Atlantis resort with its waterpark, open-air aquarium and luxury hotels. Cabbage Beach curves along the north shore, while a championship level golf course occupies the east. If you have more time, explore the array of islands by boat. Visit the dramatic Thunderball Grotto on Staniel Cay, encountering dolphins in the waters around Salt Cay or dive the barrier reef, Tongue of the Ocean and wrecks off Andros Island.
