ROL Cruise recommends…

1. Desirable beaches:

It’s easy to see why the beautiful beaches of USVI are often referred to as some of the best in the world. Sheltered, succulent-trimmed bays boast aquamarine waters that glide soothingly over stretches of powder-soft sand. The heart-shaped Magens Bay on the north coast of Saint Thomas is the most popular, though laid-back Lindquist Beach in the east comes a close second.

2. An underwater adventure:

Caribbean islands and fantastic snorkel sites go hand in hand so grab some goggles and wade out from shore to peek into the deep. For an unforgettable marine experience, visit Trunk Bay or Hawksnest Bay on tropical St. John, or sail to a smaller islet, such as remote Buck Island. Here, in the aptly named Turtle Bay and Shipwreck Bay, colourful fish swim amongst the coral reef and graceful turtles glide across the remains of the unfortunate ‘Catanza C’. If you prefer to stay dry when getting up close with sharks, stingray and starfish, take a trip to the Coral World Ocean Park on the east coast.

3. Blackbeard’s Castle:

During the early 18th century, notorious pirate Edward Teach (also known as Blackbeard) was a common figure in the Caribbean. Legend has it that the ruthless rogue watched over the harbour from the Danish-built Skytsborg Tower atop Government Hill. These days it is a National Historic Landmark known as Blackbeard’s Tower that offers various attractions. Climb the 99 steps to appreciate the spectacular views, sparkling swimming pools, bronze and copper pirate sculptures, plus a precious amber waterfall. There’s even a short rum factory tour to complete your pirate afternoon.

4. Taking in the views:

The islands’ undulating terrain affords outstanding views from their many peaks, as well as plenty to see at ground level. Gaze down at easygoing St. Thomas from the Drake’s Seat viewpoint or visit a nature trail 300m up at St. Peter Greathouse and Botanical Gardens. Discover the delicate local wildlife at the Butterfly Garden, or spot stingrays as you kayak through the Mangrove Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary and Marine Preserve. For more relaxed sightseeing, enjoy panoramic views from the Paradise Point Skyride or sample a famous Banana Daiquiri from the comfort of Mountain Top.
