Sydney is located on Cape Breton Island on the east side of the Sydney River. It was founded in 1783 by colonists from New York and New Hampshire who were loyal to the British crown. The area also attracted a large number of Scottish settlers in the early-1800s. With the opening of the coal mines and a steel plant at the turn of the 20th century, a large number of Eastern European immigrants arrived. Today, Sydney enjoys a varied ethnic population.
Today, the city is Atlantic Canada's centre of business, research and education. Clean, green, walkable streets, excellent dining and friendly maritime smiles welcome visitors in an innovative and historic cityscape. Strong emphasis is placed on cultural diversity, historic restorations and the preservation of the heritage and culture of the people of the region.
The charming town of Bar Harbor is on Mount Desert Island, easily accessible from the mainland via a bridge since 1836. Although measuring a mere sixteen by thirteen miles, the island is packed with natural wonders. It boasts the East Coast's only fjord (Somes Sound) and the highest point on the U.S. Atlantic coast with 1,530-foot-high Cadillac Mountain. The territory features no less than seventeen mountains, five lakes, hundreds of ponds, streams and the most incredible flora and fauna. The island was named Mont Deserts (bare mountains) by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1604, and for the rest of the century it was fought over by the French and the English. Even though the French were defeated in the end, the name remained.
