Embark MS Roald Amundsen for your 16 night expedition
Your adventure starts here as you set sail on your expedition
Sail through the scenic Beagle Channel and over the legendary Drake Passage. On board, the Expedition Team starts the lecture programme, giving you information about Antarctica’s fantastic animals, geology and history. You will also learn what it takes to be an Antarctic Ambassador in the mandatory briefing and join the Citizen Science programme to learn more about the wildlife and ecosystems of Antarctica.
The time at sea is also great time to enjoy all the amenities of an advanced hybrid powered expedition ship
Antarctica never fails to inspire awe and wonder, with white horizons above oceans full of icebergs and whales. Perhaps even more awe-inspiring will be your first meeting with huge colonies of fearless penguins on the pristine ice. Your Captain and Expedition Team will work with the elements to create the best possible itinerary for your adventure as you explore the most beautiful and remote places on Earth. Landings will be attempted on several sites in the South Shetlands and on the Antarctic Peninsula and aim to bring you to the incredible diversity of wildlife and landscapes the area has to offer. Everywhere you explore in Antarctica is truly pristine and offers great chances to observe penguin colonies, seals, whales, glaciers or icebergs in every shape and colour. Nowhere else on Earth offers such untouched wild beauty, explorer history and rich wildlife. Antarctica is unlike anywhere you´ve ever been
Relax in the tranquility of a day at sea, sharing experiences and exchanging stories with your fellow adventurers. Enjoy the amenities of the innovative expedition ship and look out for wildlife from our outside decks
The South Orkney Islands consist of four islands situated in the Scotia Sea about 600 km northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula. You will arrive here in the very early morning to experience the Solar Eclipse, weather permitting. The Expedition Team will be on deck to give out special-purpose solar filters which will protect your eyes while you observe the extraordinary occurrence.
A professional astronomer will also be part of the Expedition Team for the full duration of the voyage, delivering a series of in-depth lectures and providing insights during the Solar Eclipse. After observing the Solar Eclipse, explore the South Orkney Islands themselves. 85% of the islands’ surface is made up of glaciers, which make it the perfect home for various species of penguins and seals
After exploring this unforgettable continent, your ship will set course for the Falkland Islands. The Expedition Team will brief you about the history and biology of the Islands, point out wildlife from our outer decks and scout for the Albatrosses that often guide our way. Using the state-of-the-art microscopes in the ship’s Science Center, you can analyse samples taken during the expedition cruise to see another kind of ‘wildlife’ at the cellular level
Reach the westernmost outposts in the Falklands and see remote farms that have been family-owned for several generations. Call on New Island which boasts white-sand beaches and turquoise waters that could easily be mistaken for those on a Caribbean island. You may be able to go ashore on Carcass Island where your Expedition Team will look for every opportunity to take you exploring, hiking or cruising to get a closer look at the local wildlife. Stanley, the inviting capital of the Falklands, is a good size for roaming the streets on foot. Or you can join an optional excursion to explore the wilderness and wildlife in the surrounding area
As the ship completes the loop of the Magellan Strait, you will have a recap of everything you have experienced on this expedition cruise in the Science Center. Make sure you also spend some time on deck looking for wildlife
After breakfast disembark the ship and transfer to the airport for your flight to Santiago, Chile

MS Roald Amundsen is the first hybrid ship to join the Hurtigruten fleet. With new and environmentally sustainable hybrid technology, she reduces fuel consumption and cuts CO2 emissions by sailing with electrical propulsion. Electrical propulsion is a great benefit to the environment and also enhances the impact of experiencing nature meaning you can travel to the most spectacular destinations in the most sustainable way.
Hurtigruten recommends pre-booking shore excursions. This can be done up to four weeks prior to departure (two weeks if paid by credit card) at the rates presented. Shore excursions are also available to book on board but spaces may be limited. Please note: all excursions booked on board will be charged in Norwegian Kroner.
There is no official dress code on board but some guests choose to change to casualwear for dinner. The weather in Norway can vary during the course of each voyage (or even during the day!) so we recommend reading our climate zone packing guide to ensure you’re ready for every possibility.
Norwegian cuisine is served on board. Chefs use only the very best locally sourced, seasonal ingredients which are collected from port each day and used to prepare a range of delicious dishes.
Specific diets can be catered for if requested in good time. Passengers on strict diets may find that there is limited choice. A 3-course vegan menu is available in the evenings on voyages of 12-days.
Most Hurtigruten ships along the Norwegian coast have an Expedition Team who undertake special activities on board such as lectures and presentations, on-deck guiding as well as hikes and outdoor activities in many ports. The majority of activities take place both inside the ships and out on deck and are designed around the season you’re sailing in. Hurtigruten aims to get guests closer to unique environments.
Visa, American Express, MasterCard and Diners Card are all accepted as payment options on board. Norwegian Kroner (NOK) is the on board currency.
Laundry rooms with washing machines, dryers and irons are available on all ships. Tokens can be purchased at reception.
The official languages on board are Norwegian and English, though some service crew also speak German. The majority of shore excursions are guided in two or three languages.
Yes, wireless internet is available on board for a small fee, unless already included in your Select or Platinum fare.
It is not common practice to tip on Hurtigruten ships on the coastal voyage. If you feel that crew members should be rewarded for providing exceptional service, tip boxes are placed in the restaurant together with envelopes.
