Your Itinerary

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen, Denmark Sat 11 Sep 2021

Copenhagen, Denmark

With its ancient castles, brightly coloured houses and sculpture of a certain little mermaid, wandering around Copenhagen can sometimes feel like you’ve walked into a storybook.

Fredericia, Denmark

Fredericia, Denmark Sun 12 Sep 2021

Fredericia, Denmark

Fredericia was founded by King Frederick III in 1650 to provide a fortified community on the Jutland Peninsula, the only part of Denmark connected to the European mainland. The remains of the fortification, consisting of extensive earthworks along the waterfront, are today a pleasant, parklike area for strolling and investigating the many cannons and mortars left behind. The Old Town is likewise a pleasant place to explore. Several interesting churches, including the Trinitatis Church and the Sct. Michaelis Church are worth visiting as well. The distinctly modern Lyng Church makes an interesting contrast. Other landmarks in the town include the commemorative Landsoldatpladsen, a park around a statue memorializing the Danish civil war Battle of Fredericia in 1849. A climb up the landmark Water Tower offers panoramic views.

Aalborg

Aalborg, Denmark Mon 13 Sep 2021

Aalborg

As one of the important cultural hubs of Denmark, Aalborg is known for its mixture of contemporary architecture, traditional wooden Danish houses, and the many preserved stone buildings in its historical city center. A number of large city parks, fountains, a gothic cathedral and a colorful waterfront make Aalborg a favorite vacation spot. Square-rigged heritage sailing ships make a contrast with numerous architectural masterpieces such as the ultra-modern designs of the Utzon Center and the University of Aalborg. The Aalborg Carnival, one of Scandinavia’s largest festivals, takes place every year in May and draws tens of thousands of participants. The Kunsten Museum of Modern Art exemplifies the creativity and energy of this beautiful Danish city. Situated at the narrowest point of Limfjord in Jutland, Aalborg abuts some of the richest waterways in the country, which attracted not only the original Viking adventurers to the area, but settlers as far back as the Iron Age.

Invergordon, Scotland Wed 15 Sep 2021

Invergordon, Scotland

Invergordon, the port for Inverness, is located in the northern part of Scotland on the Moray Firth. The quaint town of Inverness has reminders of such historical figures as St. Columba, Mary Queen of Scots, and Oliver Cromwell. Its attractions include a 17th-century clock tower, part of a fort erected by Cromwell's army and the 19th-century cathedral. Regarded as the "Capital of the Highlands," the town holds many traditional Scottish events each summer.

Ullapool, Scotland

Oban (Halfmoon Bay)

Oban (Halfmoon Bay), New Zealand Fri 17 Sep 2021

Oban (Halfmoon Bay)

You might not realize that New Zealand has a third island. It hangs beneath the South Island and is just about the last inhabited place before Antarctica. The island itself is only about four percent inhabited, and that is its attraction. It is an unspoiled piece of primeval New Zealand. Oban is a very small town, about 800 souls. The phonebook is printed on a single sheet of A4 paper!

Cruising Milford Sound

Greenock (Glasgow), Scotland Sun 19 Sep 2021

Cruising Milford Sound

Hard by the banks of the Clyde, Greenock is a port for Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow. There are numerous attractions to visit, including a treasury of architectural masterpieces from the Italian renaissance-style City Chambers, to the austere University buildings and the ultra-modern Clyde Auditorium, whose nested ship-hull sections have inspired the locals to dub it “The Armadillo.” Entertainment is found in trying to understand the deeply inflected Glaswegian brogue.

Cruises from Liverpool, England

Liverpool, England Mon 20 Sep 2021

Cruises from Liverpool, England

Primarily an industrial port city, Liverpool grew to prominence as a result of trade with the Americas in the 1700s. The tradition of exporting goods much desired in the Americas (and elsewhere) from Liverpool continued at least until the 1960s, when the Beatles became the most famous commodity ever to reach the "Colonies." Aside from its role as a port city, Liverpool is home to one of the largest provincial universities in the United Kingdom, educating students since 1903. Architecture buffs will find a number of notable edifices well worth exploring. Two outstanding examples of classical architecture, St. George's Hall and the Town Hall, rank among the most beautiful in the world. The striking Anglican Liverpool Cathedral is the largest Anglican church in Britain.

Cruises around the British Isles

Douglas, Isle of Man Tue 21 Sep 2021

Cruises around the British Isles

Douglas is the capital of the Isle of Man. Mann, as it is also called, is a British Crown Dependency, with its own parliament and postage stamps (a popular souvenir). Here visitors can sample means of transport ranging from horse-drawn trams, to steam trains and the high-speed motorcycles that compete in the renowned Isle of Man TT races. In summer the town maintains much of the seaside resort charm of an earlier period, including the Victorian-era Grand Union Camera Obscura, now restored for your amusement.

Portland, England

Portland, England Thu 23 Sep 2021

Portland, England

Portland Island and the resort town of Weymouth are connected by a 5-mile (8 km) long neck of white sand known as Chesil Beach. Renowned as the finest example of a barrier-type beach in Europe, Chesil Beach was formed 10,000 years ago as glaciers receded and sea levels rose. The rugged coastline of Dorset and the many attractions in the area are what make Weymouth such a popular vacation destination. The Old Harbour of Weymouth is an excellent Georgian-style harbor and one of the prettiest in Europe. It bustles with activity from large catamarans, fishing boats and yachts. Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park displays over 1,000 incredible sea creatures including sea turtles, crabs, octopuses and sharks. The nearby Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens is an impressive walled garden set in 20 acres (8 hectares) of woodland. Portland Island offers stunning views across the Chesil Beach, Portland Harbour, Fleet Lagoon and Weymouth. The little egret, once a rare bird in Britain, is now regularly seen along these shores.

Cherbourg, France

Cherbourg, France Tue 28 Sep 2021

Cherbourg, France

The seaport and naval station of Cherbourg is situated along the English Channel northwest of Paris at the mouth of the Divette River. Believed to rest on the site of an ancient Roman station, Cherbourg has been occupied since ancient times and was frequently contested by the French and English in the Middle Ages because of its strategic location. Most recently passed to France in the late 18th century, the town was extensively fortified by Louis XVI. During WWII the Germans held Cherbourg until it was captured by the American forces shortly after the Normandy landings. Following a vast rehabilitation program that returned it to working condition, Cherbourg became an important Allied supply port. Today, Cherbourg is important for transatlantic shipping, shipbuilding, electronics and telephone equipment manufacturing, yachting and commercial fishing.

Founded by Carthaginians in the third century BC, this ancient Mediterranean port city exemplifies the region's tumultuous history. Romans, Visigoths, Castilians and Moors have all left their marks. Under King Philip II, Cartagena's naturally deep, sheltered harbor was developed into the nation's premier naval base, a position it still enjoys today.
