★Recommended FREE Excursion - Zadar, Vrana Lake & Lunch
Explore the cobbled streets of Zadar’s pedestrian-only Old Town and venture into the countryside to take in Croatia’s natural beauty. While meandering through the historical downtown, you will see the remains of the original stone walls and gates built to protect Zadar from Turkish invasion. Saint Donat church offers another look into the city’s past, as it was constructed in the 9th century atop a Roman forum using some of its stones as building materials. Stone steps descend into the sea at the waterfront promenade and besides serving a utilitarian purpose, they ingeniously play music as the seawater rushes through underground pipes outfitted with whistles. Nature takes center stage at Vrana Lake and the bird sanctuary that surrounds it, which you will view from atop Mount Kamenjak. One last dive into history will await you at the museum within a nearby 17th-century residence, where you will browse the exhibits and savor a lunch of traditional Croatian delicacies
Perched on the Adriatic Sea, the Italian city of Bari has long served as an important port city for both ancient and modern Italy. Today, its rich past attracts visitors from around the world. The Basilica of Saint Nicholas, built in 1087, holds the remains of its namesake beneath the altar, while the Petruzzelli Theatre is one of the grandest opera houses in the country.
Shaped like a scythe, the island of Corfu is considered one of the Mediterranean's best-kept secrets. Its lush interior is covered in cypress and olive trees while the main downtown area has elegant Venetian architecture and a serene atmosphere.
Siracusa is one of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean, with a wonderful collection of historical sites from both the ancient Greek and Roman time periods. In 2005, Siracusa and the nearby necropolis of Pantalica were deemed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Euryalus Castle, built by order of Dionysius the Elder. Also explore the Catacombs of Vigna Cassia, Saint Lucia and the Basilica of St. John. These three sites consist of a series of tunnels dug into the rock, where men and women of the Christian faith were buried, which at that time was prohibited. Made between the third and fourth century AD, they are visible along with sarcophagi paintings, frescoes, and altars.
★Recommended FREE Excursion - Island of Gozo
Delight in an exploration of Gozo Island, visiting a legendary cave, a temple that predates the Great Pyramids and the island’s alluring capital. Board a ferry on the northwestern tip of Malta for the brief crossing to the nearby island of Gozo. You’ll journey inland to the Ggantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site that comprises Malta’s earliest megalithic monuments, which include structures that predate Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Notice the round, curved architecture, which is said to be an homage to the full-figured goddess of fertility, and find cannon-like stones believed to be the tools used to hoist the site’s multi-ton slabs into place. Discover Calypso Cave, thought to be the cave Homer mentioned in The Odyssey in which the beautiful nymph Calypso kept Odysseus as a prisoner of love for seven years. Upon reaching Victoria, Gozo’s capital, view its ancient Cittadella and Baroque Cathedral of the Assumption, built in the shape of a Latin cross. Enjoy time on your own to shop or explore further before savoring a traditional Maltese lunch
An expansive marina, a city full of history and golden beaches with cerulean waters characterise the welcoming capital of the Balearic Islands archipelago.
Barcelona’s stunning blend of intriguing architecture, irrepressible culture, exquisite food and inviting beaches means that it is truly a destination that has something for everyone.
Tiny, but packed with fun, Monte Carlo offers a wonderful combination of history, beauty, entertainment and leisure. The wealthiest spot in Monaco, Monte Carlo is an enchanting place, known as the international capital of luxury and for its celebrity-sightings, casinos and nightlife. Yet the old world shines through in its art and architecture. Palaces, cathedrals and museums dot this small municipality in an old town full of rich history. Be sure to catch the once-daily changing of the guard, then tour the public areas at the Palais du Prince, home to the royal family, whose most famous resident was famous actress Grace Kelly.
