Salalah Thu 17 Mar 2022

Oman is commonly described as a Persian Gulf State. Strictly speaking, no part of Oman lies on the Persian Gulf: the nation occupies the southeastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula. Salalah, its second largest city, is an anomaly in Arabia as it benefits from the climatic effects of the yearly monsoon. The city is an oasis where tropical fruits grow abundantly. But as you travel outside the city, along the white beaches of the coast or into the serene mountains, one is soon reminded of the vast desert of the Arabian Peninsula. Salalah is the birthplace of Oman's reigning Sultan Qaboos. The city is surrounded by coconut, banana, guava and papaya groves.

Jerusalem (Ashdod), Israel

Jerusalem/Bethlehem (Ashdod) Fri 25 Mar 2022

Jerusalem (Ashdod), Israel

Ashdod produces textiles, cosmetics, and half the electrical power generated in Israel. Yet it is best known as the portal to the Holy Land. According to Scripture, Ashdod was once home to giants. It was here that the Philistines brought the captured Ark, celebrating their victory over the Israelites. Today, the city itself is a giant of industry, surpassing Haifa as the largest port in Israel. More importantly, Ashdod is your gateway to Jerusalem. This city in the hills of Judea is sacred to three of the world's great faiths. For Jews, the Western Wall - the sole surviving remnant of the Second Temple - embodies their cultural and religious identity. Christians walk the Via Dolorosa and observe the Stations of the Cross, renewing Christ's sacrifice. For Moslems, the city is home to the third holiest shrine in all Islam. From a spot near the El-Aqsa Mosque, Muhammad ascended into Heaven to receive the teaching of Allah.

The oldest city under the American flag, San Juan vibrates to a lively salsa beat. There's an unmistakable zest in the air here. Or maybe it's Puerto Rico's mix of cultures, the blend and occasional clash of four centuries of Spanish heritage overlaid with a century spent as America's only Commonwealth. Whatever the reason, San Juan is one of the most enticing ports in the Caribbean, and it only gets lovelier with age.
