A stroll through the streets and National Historic Park of Sitka is a glimpse into its unique and colorful past. A blend of Tlingit and Russian cultures defines this first capital of Alaska. Although fish canning and gold mining were the initial catalysts for growth in Sitka, the construction of an air base during World War II truly paved the way for Sitka to come into its own. One of Sitka's most intriguing structures is the Cathedral of Saint Michael, built in 1848 to honor a Russian Orthodox bishop. Sitka’s history begins thousands of years ago with the Tlingit people and their use of the land for sustenance and spirituality. Old Sitka, located just north of the present-day settlement, was founded by Russian-American Company trader Alexander Baranov in 1799. Originally named Novo-Arkhangelsk (New Archangel) under Russian rule, its name was changed to Sitka after Alaska was purchased by the United States in 1867. Sitka is a Tlingit word meaning 'by the sea.’

One of the thousands of islands of the Alexander Archipelago, Wrangell Island sits at the heart of the Tongass National Rain Forest and receives approximately 80” (203 cm) of rain per year. The city of Wrangell, a true Alaskan frontier town, sits at the northern end of the island, a short distance from the mouth of the mighty Stikine River. The history of Wrangell is deeply rooted in the Tlingit people, the fur trade and the gold rush. The Stikine River trade route brought the Tlingit people here thousands of years ago, evidenced by some forty petroglyphs at Petroglyph Beach State Historic Site and Totem Park. The Stikine River, Shakes Glacier and Anan Creek Bear Observatory are highlights in the region. Anan Creek boasts the largest pink salmon run of the Inside Passage, attracting brown and black bears in great numbers. Wrangell was named for Ferdinand Petrovich Wrangel, a Russian explorer and administrator of the Russian-America Company during the mid-1800's.

Seabourn, the ultra-luxury ocean and expedition cruise line, announced today that it will name its second new ultra-luxury purpose-built expedition ship Seabourn Pursuit, which is reflective of the passion exhibited by expedition travelers to seek out and explore natural wonders and destinations through immersive recreational activities around the world. Seabourn Pursuit is the second Seabourn expedition ship slated to launch in February 2023. Both Seabourn Pursuit and sister ship Seabourn Venture are designed and built for diverse environments to PC6 Polar Class standards and include modern hardware and technology that will extend the ships’ global deployment and capabilities. Each will carry two custom-built submarines, 24 Zodiacs, kayaks, and a 26-person expert expedition team whose role is to engage guests throughout each voyage. The ship then continues onward by exploring the waters and landscapes of Greenland, Iceland and Norway throughout the spring and early summer, in some instances retracing the path of the Vikings to the frontier town of Tromsø while carving its way through the inside passage of the Norwegian fjords along the way. A sure highlight for August 2023 is the ship’s Northwest Passage journey through some of the most remote areas in the Northern Hemisphere from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland to Nome, Alaska. Itineraries for the Seabourn Pursuit inaugural season are set to open for sale in mid-December 2021.

Seabourn FAQs

Do Seabourn cruises have a flexible cancellation policy?

Yes, Seabourn does have a flexible cancellation policy. Seabourn is allowing guests the option to cancel 30 days prior to departing or within 30 days of embarkation if you test positive for COVID-19. This is for sailings departing prior to 31st March 2023 and the monies will be returned in form of a Future Cruise Credit to use towards an alternative Seabourn sailing.

Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to travel aboard a Seabourn cruise ship?

All guests who are eligible to be vaccinated must have all initial doses administered 14 days prior to sailing. As of 5th May 2022 this will include all guests 12 years and over.

Is Wi-Fi included?

Yes, complimentary Wi-Fi will be included in your Seabourn cruise*.  All guests in an Ocean View and Veranada Suite will receive the Surf Wi-Fi Package and all guests in Penthouse Suites or above, as well as Seabourn Club members who have reached Diamond-level status or above, will receive the Stream Wi-Fi Package. Guests in Ocean View or Veranda Suites can upgrade at a supplement. 

The Surf Wi-Fi Package allows 1 device per guest will unlimited minutes for general web browsing, email, and social media applications. 

The Stream Wi-Fi Package allows up to 4 devices per guest with unlimited minutes of access to web services offered in Surf package PLUS access to video streaming services.
