Often overshadowed by nearby Beijing, Tianjin is one of China’s most fascinating and underrated cities. With a blend of European-style architecture, vibrant street culture, and a rich maritime heritage, it offers a refreshingly different perspective on urban China. Located where the Hai River meets the Bohai Sea, Tianjin has long been a key trading port – a history that continues to shape its unique character today.
One of Tianjin’s most charming areas, the Five Great Avenues – or Wudadao – is a neighbourhood unlike any other in China. This leafy district is known for its well-preserved European-style buildings, many of which were built in the early 20th century when Tianjin was home to numerous foreign concessions. The result is a picturesque blend of British, French, German and Italian architecture that gives the area a distinctly international feel. Strolling through the cobbled streets, you’ll pass elegant villas, former embassies, and tree-lined boulevards that seem more like Paris or London than northern China. It’s a peaceful place to explore on foot or by horse-drawn carriage, with plenty of photo opportunities and quiet corners to pause and take it all in. Cafés, galleries and boutique shops now occupy many of the old buildings, making Wudadao a pleasant spot to linger. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Tianjin’s cosmopolitan past – and a refreshing change of pace from China’s usual mega-city hustle.
For a more traditional Chinese experience, head to Tianjin’s Ancient Culture Street (Gu Wenhua Jie), a vibrant pedestrian area packed with history, colour and local flavour. Designed to look like a Qing Dynasty-era marketplace, the street is lined with classical buildings, ornate archways and intricate carvings that recreate the atmosphere of old China. Here, you’ll find everything from handcrafted souvenirs and antiques to paper-cutting art and calligraphy scrolls. It’s a great place to pick up unique gifts or simply enjoy the energy of the crowds and street performers. At the heart of the street is the Tianhou Palace, a beautifully preserved temple dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu. Sailors and merchants once came here to pray for safe voyages – a nod to Tianjin’s longstanding connection with the sea. Step inside to admire the elaborate woodwork and peaceful courtyards, or light some incense and make a wish of your own.
If you want a bird’s-eye view of Tianjin, the Tianjin Eye is the place to go. This striking Ferris wheel stands 120 metres tall and is uniquely built over the Yongle Bridge, making it the only one of its kind constructed on a bridge. From the top, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the city and the winding Hai River below. It’s especially beautiful in the evening, when Tianjin’s skyline lights up and reflections shimmer across the water. The ride takes about 30 minutes – enough time to relax, take some photos, and spot key landmarks across the city. The riverside area around the Tianjin Eye is also worth exploring. It’s a lively place for a walk, with food stalls, street musicians, and a relaxed atmosphere that invites you to slow down and soak up the scenery.
