MS Estrela is a stunning river ship that serves both APT Cruising and Travelmarvel guests, ensuring that those sailing with Travelmarvel still experience an exceptionally high-quality vessel with outstanding amenities.
My journey was with the APT Cruising experience, where everything was truly all-inclusive - drinks, dining, and top-tier service, with only premium brand surcharges for those seeking the finest selections.
MS Estrela boasted 58 staterooms accommodating up to 120 passengers. Guests could choose from 10 Window Staterooms, 46 French Balcony Suites and two Owner’s Suites.
I was fortunate enough to stay in one of the Owner’s Suites, and the experience was truly unforgettable. Located on the Upper Deck, the suite featured two sizeable French balconies, a spacious sitting area, a deluxe queen-size bed and a generous en suite bathroom. Thoughtful amenities such as personal climate control, a flat-screen television and complimentary Wi-Fi added to the experience, and the dual-aspect windows offered expansive views of the Douro River.
On the Upper Deck and Main Deck, you’ll find a range of French Balcony Suites. These accommodations featured an electric slide-down window, allowing guests to feel the fresh breeze. Window Staterooms were situated on the Lower Deck. In this category, guests could enjoy a premium en suite bathroom, personal climate control, a flat-screen television and complimentary Wi-Fi.
MS Estrela had one main restaurant, which was forward on the Main Deck. This spot quickly became my go-to, and one of my favourite things about it was its abundance of options. The chef’s recommendations also encouraged adventurous dining, while classic favourites were always available.
My mornings started with an indulgent buffet spread - hot items like waffles, golden pancakes, and a full traditional English breakfast alongside an array of continental choices, including cereals, pastries and sliced meats.
Lunch varied between buffet choices and made-to-order dishes from the daily menu. I found myself torn between the rich flavours of the Portuguese beef stew, the perfectly grilled fish and the fresh soups and salads. For those with a sweet tooth (like me), there was always a tempting array of desserts and ice creams.
The welcome dinner on our first night set the tone for what was to come throughout our voyage. A five-course feast, the meal was a celebration of flavours. The main courses catered to every preference, and the desserts were equally spectacular.
Each meal was accompanied by carefully chosen wines, expertly paired to elevate the flavours on the plate. The restaurant staff went the extra mile, even making sure bottles of guests’ favourite wine were available in the bar so they could continue enjoying them well into the evening.
There was one bar and lounge on MS Estrela, and it could be found on the Upper Deck. I loved this spot as a place to unwind and watch the world drift by through the expansive windows that framed the stunning scenery. The bow-side deck offered the best vantage point, perfect for enjoying a glass of wine while soaking in the beauty of the river.
The Sun Deck was, without a doubt, my favourite place onboard. There was ample seating and an outdoor bar where attentive staff kept the cocktails flowing. Meanwhile, the BBQ offered a taste of Australian hospitality.
The swimming pool, which was the largest on the Douro River, was a great spot for a refreshing dip whenever you needed a break from the sun. The putting green was also a fun addition.
A highlight of my cruise on the Douro River was a VIP visit to Quinta de Pacheca, one of the most celebrated estates in the Douro region. Nestled in a stunning landscape of terraced vineyards near Régua, the estate celebrated the diversity of Port wine.
The insightful session showcased a variety of wines through expertly guided tastings. We tried the deep, complex notes of aged Tawny and vibrant fruit-forward Ruby Port, along with many other flavours. With scenic vineyard views, Quinta de Pacheca’s setting enhanced the experience. The staff’s impressive knowledge made the session educational.
