The wide range of experiences available ensures that there’s something for every interest and mobility level. Hurtigruten categorises excursions into four different levels based on physical requirements to ensure that guests are clear on whether it’s right for them or not. The categories range from level 1 to level 4; level 1 is suitable for everyone, level 2 is suitable for most, level 3 requires an average physical condition, and level 4 requires a good physical condition. You’ll also find that while many of the excursions are offered year-round, some are season-specific.

Trondheim with Nidaros Cathedral

Difficulty level: Level 1 - Suitable for everyone

Duration: 2 hours

Transportation: Bus

Journey through time with Hurtigruten as you embark on an exploration of the original capital of Norway. With roots dating back to 997, Trondheim has evolved through the ages, shaped and enriched by the numerous periods that have defined its past. As well as being recognised as one of Norway’s oldest and most historically significant cities, it’s also bursting with culture and has earned a reputation for its innovation and exceptional culinary offerings. As the bus travels through Trondheim’s streets and boroughs, the experienced guide will share a fascinating insight into the city’s past. Keep an eye out for the well-preserved, colourful wharves and the iconic 19th-century wooden bridge featuring distinctive red archways situated in the Bakklandet district. Have your camera ready as you make a short stop at Utsikten to admire the city from above. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the impressive Nidaros Cathedral, described as the most beautiful religious building in Norway. It’s essential to note that photography is not permitted inside Nidaros Cathedral. If you visit on a Sunday or a bank holiday, the guided tour will take place outside the cathedral and in the museum due to the church service. The excursion is also subject to a minimum number of participants

The Arctic Capital: Tromsø

Difficulty level: Level 1 - Suitable for everyone

Tromsø has long played a pivotal role in Arctic exploration and remains a city rich in character and heritage. This excursion offers a chance to explore some of the most notable sights of the third-largest city north of the Arctic Circle. Hop on Tromsø’s famous cable car and journey to the top of Mount Storsteinen, which is situated 420m above sea level. Prepare to witness unforgettable views across the city and of the fjords, mountains, and beautiful landscapes that surround it. You might choose to explore the plateau or, if you’re feeling peckish, you might opt for a snack at the Fjellstua restaurant. You’ll then visit the striking Arctic Cathedral, an iconic part of Tromsø’s skyline. The raw beauty of Arctic nature inspires its striking structure, featuring beautiful glass mosaic windows. The final stop on the excursion takes you to Full Steam, the world’s northernmost coastal museum, where you can take a deep dive into the region’s maritime heritage. Here, you can expect to learn more about the history, culture, and traditions of Sea Sami and their deep connection to the ocean and the Arctic environment. Please note that this excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants. Due to expansion and renovation work, the Fjellheisen gondola will not be part of this excursion from April to June 2025. An alternative itinerary will be available during this period. 

The North Cape

Difficulty level: Level 1 - Suitable for everyone

Duration: 3 hours

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure with Hurtigruten as you visit the northernmost point on the continent, the North Cape. No matter when you choose to visit, something magical awaits here. In the summer months, keep an eye out for herds of reindeer grazing peacefully on the nearby clifftop plateaus. Come winter, the landscape transforms into a pristine wonderland of unspoilt white plains and snow-capped mountains, bathed in the gentle glow of the Arctic light. You’ll also stop at the visitor centre at North Cape Hall, where you’ll watch an impressive 180° panoramic film, learn more about the area’s fascinating history through exhibitions in the underground tunnel, and step into the world’s northernmost chapel. Please note that this excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants. 

Midnight Concert in Tromsø Cathedral

Difficulty level: Level 1 - Suitable for everyone

Duration: 1 hour 15 mins

Transportation: On foot 

Step ashore and meet your guides, who will be waiting to lead you on a scenic walk to the iconic Tromsø Cathedral. Built in 1861, the cathedral has remained a focal point of the city’s spiritual and cultural identity. Upon arrival, you will receive an evening playlist, carefully curated with accompanying notes to enhance your experience even further. Prepare to embark on a journey through Norway’s musical heritage with talented musicians who perform a delightful blend of Nordic classical masterpieces, familiar melodies, and folk tunes. It’s important to note that performances do tend to vary from season to season. Expect breathtaking acoustics, an enchanting ambience and a truly moving end to your day. Please note that this excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants, and filming and photography are not permitted during the concert. 

Kirkenes Snowhotel

Difficulty level: Level 2 - Suitable for most

Duration: 3 hours

Transportation: Bus

Meals included: A shot of fruit juice and a local snack

Affectionately known as the ‘coolest’ hotel in Norway, the Kirkenes Snowhotel is a remarkable retreat crafted entirely from snow and ice. Upon arrival, you’ll be taken into Norway’s largest ice bar, where you will be greeted and have the opportunity to sample an ice-cold crowberry shot. The extraordinary Snow Suites are true works of art crafted entirely from snow and ice. Every suite boasts a unique design and different theme, featuring intricate carvings, bespoke furnishings, and striking ice sculptures crafted by talented artists from around the world. Afterwards, you’ll have the chance to meet the resident reindeer that roam the park and visit the Dogyard, home to 180 energetic Alaskan huskies and their adorable pups. Before you leave, you will have the chance to relax by the fire in the hotel’s restaurant and snack on some local delicacies. If time allows, you may stop at Prestfjellet Mountain, which offers incredible views of the town and surrounding areas. Please note that this excursion is subject to weather and snow conditions, as well as a minimum number of participants. 

Husky Tour

Difficulty level: Level 3 - Average physical condition

Duration: 3 hours

Transportation: Bus and dog sled

Clothing recommendation: Comfortable shoes, warm and windproof clothing. Thermal clothing is provided. 

Meals included: Warm drink 

Traditional husky sledding is one of Norway’s most thrilling and sought-after experiences, offering an unforgettable way to explore the country’s snow-covered wilderness. Once you arrive at the husky camp, you will be suited in cosy thermal gear, ready to face the Arctic elements. Excited huskies wait to whisk you away on an unforgettable journey through the pristine wilderness. Each sled will be accompanied by a skilled musher who is experienced in guiding the pack, ensuring a smooth and exhilarating ride. All you need to do is sit back, relax, and soak up the magic as you meander through the terrain, cross frozen lakes, glide through snow-dusted forests, and travel along mountain plateaus. As the trip comes to an end, enjoy gathering around a cosy campfire with a warm drink in hand. Please note that this excursion is subject to weather and snow conditions, and a minimum number of participants is required. Participants must be at least 7 years old when accompanied by an adult. 

Snowmobile Trip in the Polar Night

Difficulty level: Level 3 - Average physical condition

Duration: 2 hours 15

Transportation: Bus and snowmobile 

Clothing recommendation: Comfortable shoes, warm and windproof clothing. Thermal clothing is provided. 

Meals included: Warm drink 

Prepare for an exciting snowmobile adventure through one of Norway’s most remote and breathtaking landscapes. Your journey begins in Mehamn, described as the world’s northernmost mainland town, where expert instructors will guide you through a training session before you set off across the dramatic mountain terrain. As you travel towards the historic fishing village of Kjøllefjord, you’ll weave through snow-covered valleys, breathe in the fresh winter air, and learn about the region’s unique climate, geography, and way of life. Along the way, you’ll also gain an insight into the traditions and culture of the indigenous Sámi people. And if luck is on your side, you might witness the ethereal dance of the Northern Lights illuminating the Arctic sky – the perfect finishing touch to an already unforgettable experience.
