What to pack for an Iceland cruise with HX

First-person advice on what to pack for a cruise to Iceland

If you’ve read my previous posts (A detailed look at MS Fridtjof Nansen’s Polar Outside cabins and Elemental Iceland: A captivating circumnavigation), you’ll know that last month, I was lucky enough to visit Iceland with the expedition experts, HX. We spent seven nights sailing around the country, seeing and doing lots of amazing things.

Ahead of going, I wasn’t sure what to pack. So I thought it would be handy to share what I took with me, in case you’re in the same position. But first, let’s look at the itinerary and what you can expect when visiting Iceland in May.

(H2) Elemental Iceland: Circular Saga from Reykjavík

The Elemental Iceland: Circular Saga from Reykjavík itinerary is a seven-night voyage that starts and ends in Reykjavík and sails to Grundarfjörður, Isafjörður, Akureyri, Husavík, Bakkagerði and Heimaey.

We visited in May, when you can enjoy 16 to 20 daylight hours and plenty of outdoor activities. The weather and temperatures vary depending on which part of the country you sail to. For example, in Bakkagerði, we basked in glorious sunshine, while in Heimaey, we battled the elements in multiple layers.

What I packed for Elemental Iceland: Circular Saga from Reykjavík

As this was my first-ever expedition cruise, I was a little unsure what to pack. Luckily, HX sent a handy packing guide before departure, which listed everything we’d need for our seven-night cruise. What’s more, when you board, HX provides you with a complimentary water-resistant expedition jacket and a water bottle, which are excellent additions to your expedition wardrobe.

It’s important to mention that the dress code onboard is relaxed and informal, even for dinners. Knowing how active we’d be influenced the items in my suitcase, I wanted to be as comfortable as possible at all times.

Here’s what I packed for the Elemental Iceland itinerary:

Clothing:

  • One pair of tracksuit bottoms, one pair of jeans, one pair of waterproof trousers and five pairs of leggings
  • Five long-sleeved tops and two t-shirts
  • Two hoodies, four sweatshirts and a fleece
  • Two pairs of comfortable trainers, a pair of hiking boots and a pair of flip flops
  • A gilet
  • Two swimming costumes
  • A hat, a backpack and a crossbody bag

Toiletries:

  • Skincare products
  • Makeup
  • Sea sickness tablets and paracetamol
  • Sun cream
  • Blister plasters
  • Shampoo and conditioner

Other:

  • A travel adapter plug
  • A hairdryer
  • Two books
