In celebration of World Vegetarian Day, we’re shining a light on the ships leading the way
Published on 01 Oct 2025
Finding delicious vegetarian food while on holiday used to mean settling for the odd meat-free option, but times have changed - and the cruise industry is keeping pace. Today, more and more ships are recognising the demand for plant-based dining, with creative menus and even entire restaurants devoted to vegetarian and vegan cuisine.
In celebration of World Vegetarian Day, we’re shining a light on the ships and lines leading the way. While most cruise lines now offer generous vegetarian menus across their fleets, two of our trusted cruise partners have gone a step further. P&O Cruises’ Arvia and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Aqua each feature their own dedicated vegetarian restaurants, raising the bar for meat-free dining at sea.
In this blog, we take a closer look at these pioneering venues, as well as highlight the cruise lines leading the way with thoughtful vegetarian menus.
On Arvia, Green & Co featuring Mizuhana offers a fresh approach to plant-led dining at sea.
As a speciality restaurant, it goes far beyond token vegetarian options and instead puts bold, creative dishes centre stage. The menu changes with the seasons, but you can expect an array of small plates and sharers, from cauliflower tempura and sweet potato pakoras to rainbow tortilla stacks layered with cashew cheese and avocado. Larger mains showcase the kitchen’s flair, with standouts such as a spice chakalaka Wellington wrapped in golden pastry or miso-glazed celeriac fondant served with truffle jus. Even the desserts are thoughtfully crafted, with combinations like blackcurrant gel with pear sorbet or a playful chocolate earth plate that looks almost too pretty to eat.
The restaurant itself feels chic yet relaxed, with the option to sit at Mizuhana’s sushi bar and watch chefs at work or enjoy a table with ocean views. Service is polished and knowledgeable, with staff happy to guide you through dishes and offer recommendations.
While there is a modest supplement to dine here, Green & Co featuring Mizuhana more than justifies it, having been named Best Fine Dining - Large Ship at the 2023 Cruise Ship Interiors Awards. For vegetarians and vegans in particular, it’s a highlight of the ship.
You can find Green & Co featuring Mizuhana on Deck 8 of Arvia.
When Norwegian Aqua set sail in 2025, it brought with it something completely new for Norwegian Cruise Line: Planterie, the brand’s first dedicated vegetarian and plant-based restaurant.
Located within the Indulge Food Hall, Planterie is designed to prove that plant-led cuisine can be just as flavourful, colourful and satisfying as any other dining experience at sea. The menu focuses on vibrant bowls and wholesome dishes. Expect combinations like a Mediterranean-style bowl with roasted vegetables, tabbouleh and lemony dressings, or a smoky Southwest-inspired creation with spiced tempeh, grains and beans. Fresh herbs, bright sauces and inventive toppings ensure every dish bursts with flavour.
Because it sits inside the Indulge Food Hall, the atmosphere is more casual and sociable than a formal restaurant, with a choice of indoor and outdoor seating so you can enjoy your meal with sweeping sea views. Diners can also combine a plant-based dish from Planterie with options from other food stations in the hall, making it a flexible, mix-and-match experience.
Planterie is in the Indulge Food Hall on Deck 8 of Norwegian Aqua.
While dedicated vegetarian restaurants at sea are still rare, many cruise lines now offer dedicated vegetarian and vegan menus across their fleets.
These menus go far beyond the token “meat-free option” of the past, providing thoughtfully designed dishes and full meal choices so that vegetarian travellers can enjoy the same variety and quality as everyone else onboard.
