History of the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a country located in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean region. First discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus, the Dominican Republic is the second-largest nation in the Antilles by area.

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is a collage of cultures and neighbourhoods. Known for its history, art, food and nightlife, Santo Domingo is worth visiting for its impressive balance of laidback spirit and party atmosphere. Although they love their downtime, the people of the Dominican Republic know how to party and carnival and festival celebrations take place all year round. Peek through these cultural windows and immerse yourself in the elaborate celebrations that this spectacular country is prominent for. Explore past the capital and you’ll notice the rest of the Dominican Republic is rural and agricultural. Drive along the dusty roads and you’ll see animals grazing on the roadside as well as fresh produce growing in abundance. Venture inland to experience the rivers that meander their way through green jungles and glistening waterfalls.

Home to a picture-postcard coastline as well as award-winning golf courses, La Romana is the Dominican Republic’s seventh-largest city. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in diversity! Fields of sugar canes, white sandy beaches and rainforests all make up the surrounding areas whilst the offshore island of Saona and Catalinita are home to turtle-filled caves and an abundance of marine life. The hidden caves and coves of the Dominican Republic are home to clusters of migrating humpback whales and other wondrous sea creatures. Take a boat from the port of La Romana and dive beneath the depths to experience the size and beauty of these animals up close and personal. Tours run from January to mid-March and come alive with the song and dance of the migrating whales.
