Overview of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in South Asia. It lies in the Indian Ocean and shares a maritime border with India and the Maldives.

Sri Lanka is an island nestled between pockets of lush, green forestry that holds secrets to wildlife that has lived on the island for thousands of years. Escape the scorching sun and head into the canopies of the green treelines. Embark on a tour of the tea plantations or walk the rainforest peaks with a locals guide, either way, a trip to Sri Lanka is incomplete without experiencing the true beauty of the lush, green tropics.

If there is one thing that Sri Lanka is known for, it’s the plethora of pristine sandy beaches that line its coast. Home to nesting turtles, the beaches near Colombo are perfect for a day of relaxation or a dip in the sea for a surf. Head to Kalpitiya or Negoma Beaches for a day exploring the rocky out coves that line the shores and relax under the shade of the palm trees.

Sri Lanka is a country rich in ancient history with many of its famous locations gaining UNESCO World Heritage site status, quite a big achievement for such a small island. Head to Anuradhapura and visit the ancient city that holds many secrets to the civilisations of past times and witness temple ruins and ancient pools left untouched for centuries. If you’re looking for something a bit older, head to the Sri Maha Bodhi, the oldest and longest surviving tree in the world.

There is only one way to get around Sri Lanka and that’s alongside locals on the train. Hop on board and watch out the window or in a prime standing spot as you whiz past rolling hills covered in green tea leaves, all being picked by hand. Give the workers a wave as you travel past and jump off at your chosen station for a taste of Sri Lankan vendors all selling corn fritters and traditional chilli curry dishes.
