What to see in Beppu

Beppu is famous for its hot springs, vibrant culture and stunning natural surroundings. Known for having one of the highest concentrations of hot springs in the world, Beppu offers a range of unique experiences for travellers.

A must-visit attraction in Beppu is the Hells of Beppu (Jigoku Meguri), a collection of unique and visually striking hot springs located in different parts of the city. The term “hell” refers to these hot springs, not because they are dangerous but because they are often too hot to bathe in and are instead viewed for their beauty and fascinating features. The Hells is a major tourist attraction, offering visitors the chance to explore seven different hot spring sites, each with its own unique characteristics. For instance, the Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) is a vibrant blue hot spring surrounded by lush tropical plants, while the Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) features deep red water, giving it an eerie, otherworldly appearance. Another interesting one is the Tasumaki Jigoku, which is famous for its geyser-like eruptions, showcasing the power of geothermal energy. The Hells of Beppu provide an excellent opportunity to marvel at the various forms and colours of these geothermal wonders. While most of the Hells are not for bathing, they offer a memorable experience for visitors, with foot baths and viewing platforms available in many locations.

Next, immerse yourself in the relaxing culture of Beppu by visiting one of its many onsen (hot spring bathhouses). Beppu is often called the “onsen capital” of Japan, and it’s no surprise, as the city boasts over 2,000 hot springs. The onsen experience is deeply embedded in Japanese culture, offering relaxation, therapeutic benefits, and a sense of tranquillity. Beppu’s public bathhouses range from traditional to modern, with some offering scenic views of the city and the sea. One of the most popular onsen resorts is Kankaiji Onsen, a historical hot spring with a relaxing atmosphere and a variety of bath options, including outdoor baths and steam rooms. For a truly luxurious experience, Beppu Onsen offers several high-end resorts where you can soak in private baths surrounded by nature, enhancing your sense of relaxation. Many of these baths are infused with mineral-rich waters that are believed to have healing properties, particularly for ailments like joint pain and fatigue.

Make sure to also visit Takasakiyama Monkey Park, located on a mountain just outside Beppu. This wildlife park is home to over 1,5000 Japanese macaque monkeys, and it offers visitors the chance to observe these fascinating creatures up close in a natural, protected environment. The monkeys roam freely in the park, and you can watch them interact with each other, play and forage in their natural habitat. A highlight of the park is the opportunity to walk through a designated area where the monkeys gather. Visitors can feed the monkeys in a safe, controlled environment, providing a fun and educational experience for families and animal lovers. In addition to the monkeys, the park offers great hiking trails up the summit of Takasakiyama, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Beppu and the surrounding areas. The views from the top of the mountain are breathtaking, with sweeping vistas of the coastline, the city below and the surrounding countryside.
