ROL Cruise recommends...

1. Ride a cable car to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar

The Rock of Gibraltar is the destination’s most popular attraction. Hop on a cable car to whisk up to the top of this dramatic landform and enjoy the spectacular views on offer. From its height of 426 metres you can gaze across to the African coastline, Spain’s Costa del Sol and a panoramic view of Gibraltar itself. Feeling peckish? Enjoy the views from the comfort of the Top of the Rock Cafe.

2. Meet the monkeys

Gibraltar is home to the only wild monkey population in the European continent. Barbary macaques (a type of tailless ape) can be found in many areas throughout the territory, but Queen’s Gate seems to be their favourite spot to hang out. Feel free to take a few photos, but keep an eye on your belongings (particularly any food you have on your person) – these cheeky monkeys are expert pickpockets!

3. Grab a bargain

Situated outside the European Customs and VAT area, Gibraltar is a great place to find a bargain. Head to Main Street for the best shopping to be found on the Mediterranean – here you’ll find cosmetics, perfumes, jewellery, tobacco and spirits by top brands at fantastic prices. Sterling is accepted throughout Gibraltar, making shopping a completely fuss-free experience. For unique souvenirs, try one of the artisan shops in Casemates Square. While you’re there, visit the Gibraltar Crystal Factory and see the glass blowers at work.

4. Look out for the dolphins

You may have heard about Gibraltar’s famous Rock Monkeys but did you know the area is a great place to see dolphins too? The Strait of Gibraltar is home to Common Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins and Striped Dolphins. There are several companies that will take you out on a boat to get up close to these magnificent sea creatures – visit www.visitgibraltar.gi for details.

5. Venture into St Michael’s Cave

The deep St Michael’s Cave was once believed to provide a subterranean link with Africa, and legend has it that’s how the Rock Apes came to reach Gibraltar. Today the Cave is a key attraction in the area and is even sometimes used as a unique auditorium for concerts, ballet and drama. Take a tour of this magical cave to witness the beautiful result of thousands of years of nature at work.
