What to see in Tobermory

Tobermory, located on the Isle of Mull, is a charming and colourful town, renowned for its picturesque setting and vibrant atmosphere. As the island's capital, it offers visitors a delightful array of activities and attractions, particularly around the scenic Tobermory port.

One of the town’s most popular attractions is the Tobermory Distillery. Nestled at the foot of a steep hill right by the water, this distillery is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland, dating back to 1798. Visitors can embark on a tour to learn about the traditional process of whisky making, from mashing and fermenting to distilling and ageing. The highlight of the tour is, of course, the tasting session, where guests can savour the unique flavours of Tobermory's single malt Scotch. The distillery also offers a glimpse into the town's history and its long-standing relationship with whisky production, making it a fascinating visit for both whisky enthusiasts and curious travellers.

A short walk from the port leads you to the Mull Aquarium, the UK's first catch-and-release aquarium. This unique aquarium offers an ever-changing collection of local marine life, as the creatures are returned to the sea, and new ones are brought in regularly. The Mull Aquarium provides an interactive and educational experience, where visitors can learn about the local marine ecosystem and even get hands-on with some of the sea creatures in the touch pool. The aquarium's commitment to conservation and education about marine life makes it a must-visit, especially for families and nature enthusiasts.

For those who appreciate natural beauty and outdoor activities, a boat trip from Tobermory port is an excellent way to explore the surrounding areas. These boat trips offer a chance to experience the breathtaking scenery of the Isle of Mull and its wildlife. You might see a variety of seabirds, seals, dolphins and, if you’re lucky, even minke whales and basking sharks. Some tours visit the nearby Staffa Island, famous for its basalt columns and the magnificent Fingal's Cave, which inspired Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture. Other tours might take you to the Treshnish Isles, where you can observe puffins and other seabird colonies. These boat trips not only provide stunning views but also offer a sense of adventure and an opportunity to connect with Scotland's wild natural landscapes.
