A large part of the history of Ushuaia is linked to its now defunct prison, built in 1902. Nowadays, the site is used as a museum unravelling the story of the city. A nod to the region’s naval history and unforgiving coastlines, the museum is home to a number of vessels, including reproductions of those belonging to the Yamana people (also called Yaghan), the area’s original inhabitants.
If you’re in the area for a couple of days or more, make time to visit Piratour in the tourist port for one of their famed trips to visit the Magellanic and Gentoo penguins which live on Martillo Island, around 90km from Ushuaia. When you’re this close to Antarctica it would be a pity not to make friends with its famous wildlife!
If it’s a photo opportunity you’re after, none come much finer than the views at this famous park, located in the ecoregion of Altos Andes and Patagonian Forest. Full of wildlife including parakeets, condors and oystercatchers, this subantarctic paradise brings together waterfalls, forests, glaciers and mountains to create one of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world.
Adrenaline junkies with a few hours to spare are well catered for at Cerro Castor, located half an hour away from Ushuaia. This ski resort located on breathtaking snow-capped mountains hosts a number of winter sports including skiing and snowboarding - you can even ride snowcats and husky sleighs! Families will be well looked after, with a number of places to stop for food and refreshments as well as a ski school.
Lovers of steam trains, young and old, will adore ‘The Train of the End of the World’, one of Ushuaia’s most famous tourist attractions. Travelling between the station at Tierra del Fuego National Park and the End of the World station, this once-in-a-lifetime journey takes in the sights and sounds of the park as well as the beautiful River Pipo. When viewed from an elegant train carriage, who could fail to fall in love with this unique part of the world?
