Music and science lovers of all ages are sure to be impressed by Zadar’s truly unique Sea Organ, a feat of architectural engineering. A musical instrument like you’ve never seen before, this huge waterside structure plays a range of notes according to changes in the wind and waves. If you have some extra time to spare, be sure to experience the Sun Salutation, another sensory masterpiece from its creator, Nikola Basic.
This ninth century church offers another treat for architecture-lovers. Recognised as the largest pre-Romanesque building in Croatia, its impressive stature and circular shape houses relics from the days when a Roman forum stood on the site - namely, a sacrificial altar on which the words ‘IVNONI AVGUSTE IIOVI AVGUSTO’ can still be made out. If you’re lucky, you’ll experience the International Festival of Medieval Renaissance Music, a yearly event held in the church’s inspiring interior.
On a quiet day, there’s nothing like getting out in the fresh air for a walk along the seafront, and in Zadar you can do this in style thanks to the city’s Riva. A popular promenade featuring beautiful flowers and lawns, it is the best place for a spot of people watching – and a dip in the water too, if the mood takes you! Drink in the views of the Zadar Channel, nearby islands and the wider ocean and you’ll never want to leave. This area of the city plays host to a number of great restaurants and bars, so you’ll be well catered for if your waterside stroll works up an appetite.
If you’ve got an afternoon or more to fill, take an excursion out to the Kornati Islands, a spectacular spot to indulge in a little sailing, diving, snorkeling – or just to lie back and enjoy the views. History fans will particularly enjoy a tour of a traditional Croatian village. Located nearby to Zadar and one of Croatia’s most popular National Parks, a visit to the Islands is a great way to unwind with all the family.
