Overview

The cold, gloomy weather back home will be a distant memory on this wonderful winter escape. Spending an unforgettable fortnight aboard Balmoral, you’ll bask in the soothing warmth of sun-kissed islands and discover a smorgasbord of astounding attractions – a stunning way to kick-off the New Year. With its rich, colourful flora and barren volcanic landscapes, Madeira begs to be explored, so make the most of your overnight stay in Funchal to wander the unique levada walking trails and be spellbound by the incredible scenery; admire the many enchanting gardens at your leisure; or perhaps journey to the Cabo Girão cliff for unspoilt sea views. Whatever you choose to do, your two days here will be the perfect start to this island hopping adventure. Then in the Canaries you’ll take in the diverse culture, fascinating history and untouched natural beauty of four spectacular islands on four consecutive days. Discover an abundance of highlights, from verdant forests to the soaring San Antonio Volcano, on tours from Santa Cruz de La Palma and you’ll quickly understand why La Palma is affectionately known as ‘The Pretty Island’; then cruise to the popular island of Tenerife for the chance to climb Mount Teide, uncover the secrets of the Pyramids of Güímar, and delight at the array of museums, elegant parks and pretty squares found within the capital, Santa Cruz. You can make the most of Gran Canaria’s renowned tropical climate on the oasis-like dunes of Maspalomas, or visit the charming towns of Teror and Arucas during a day in Las Palmas; while in Arrecife the unmissable attractions of Lanzarote await discovery, such as the lunar-like landscapes of Timanfaya National Park, the magnificent Fire Mountains and the beautiful saltwater lagoon of Jameos Del Agua Cave. Before sailing back to the UK, you’ll also divert to Portugal for a call into the culture-rich, attraction-packed capital, Lisbon.

The Ship

Named after the Scottish home of the Royal Family. Still smaller than most cruise ships today, there are 710 cabins and suites and generous public space for the 1,300 guests on board. The main restaurant is Ballindalloch (named after the Speyside village and castle), while the two other formal restaurants are Avon and Spey – named after two of Scotland’s most beautiful salmon rivers. There’s a comfy pub with occasional live music or comedy, cabaret and shows in the Neptune Lounge, or drift away with a cool drink and spectacular seascapes in the Observatory Lounge.
